  It was the main place for all orthodox in greece, cyprus,romania and russia etc.after the conquest, the patriarchate moved from the buildings in Hagia Sophia and then moved this place in front of the golden horn. You need to ask permision to visit.

  .Its always an escapade of its own for us when we can visit places that has been preserved for hundreds of years and is still in mint condition now! As this Greek Patriarchate is real-lii a sight especial-lii inside as everything thing seems to be made of Gold! The inside is an absolute must see when in this part of Istanbul!

  As this is very much an active religious site the only part open to the public is the church. While the architecture is simple the interior is magnificent. Make sure to grab the brochure in the entry to get an explanation of some of the churches more interesting items.

  While not exactly imposing from the outside, the inside is supremely beautiful and imparts a feeling of serenity and reverence even in a life-long atheist like myself. I would highly recommend visiting in time to attend vespers, preferably on Saturday, as the service is beautiful and provides an oasis of peace and rest in this otherwise bustling, hectic city.
  
  By the way, the person who earlier suggested that the Ecumenical Patriarchy is today of no importance obviously has no idea what he is talking about.

  Iconic place, the equivalent of the Holy See for Orthodox Christians. Apart from its importance, the church of St George is a typical example of basilica style, not big and impressive at the outside (as the law for christian churches in Turkey implies) but beautiful and ornamented in the inside. Most recommended._
