We had an amazing and welcoming stay. We initially booked the small and cozy room but upon seeing it we asked for an upgrade. Wendy went above and beyond for us to make our stay more enjoyable. Beautiful and peaceful stay. The views from the room are worth the stay alone.

The reviews that I read before staying here were mixed with most of the negative comments about the hotel being run down. While I agree that the hotel is a bit run down, I found this to actually add to the hotel's charm. You feel like you're staying at a hotel where you're favorite murder mystery novel was set. The bed was comfy and clean. The views are wonderful. The staff was very friendly and helpful. And finally the breakfast was more than adequate. I wouldn't want to stay here more than two nights But on the whole I would recommend if you're staying the night to see the glowworm caves.

While a little tired-looking from the outside, the Hotel still retained a fair portion of its old-world charm. This manifested itself in the cheerful service, the complimentary access to the spa bath, and a truly sumptuous dinner at the 'Lazy Trout' restaurant located within the hotel. The location of the hotel provided quick access to the Waitomo Caves tourist attraction, just over one kilometre away from the front door.

An historic and eccentric slice of New Zealand history! The worn building (c1905?) is might not appeal to every traveller, but it is a fantastically strange adventure. The accommodations were terrific.

Nice hotel, a little spooky.something drank the bottled water and cleaned our bathroom while we were sleeping😨 Other than sleeping with the lights on, after reading it is one of the top haunted hotels in New Zealand, it was nice. The staff were very kind and helpful

The hotel was really nice, with clean rooms, bathrooms, a spa, and a good restaurant. However, some of the staff seemed like they didn't want to be there. Short answers to questions, a lack of eye contact, and a harsh tone that made them seem unapproachable. That being said that was only my experience with one staff member. Another was more than willing to elaborate on answers and give me suggestions on things to do in the nearby area or during my trip across NZ.
I still recommend staying here as the facility is nice and in a great location up the Glowworm caves. It is worth noting that the WiFi is pretty slow. But that's more of a personal gripe.

Interesting hotel. We didn't know they are one of those haunted hotels when I made the reservation. The laundry charge is very reasonable. Our room is very clean and right next to the most haunted room, and our bed is against the wall shared with that room. Neither of us had bad dreams or seen anything.

Dated, but comfortable. Didn't spot any ghosts or ghouls but wouldn't have been too surprised

Great old style hotel. It's in need of a bit of TLC but I think that was the charm of it! Kid friendly and they have public spa pools as well. Great food, totally recommend it even if you are not staying there. Restaurant is called The Lazy Trout.

Perfectly adequate hotel if you're staying in the area - it's one of the original hotels and it feels like it. Although its reminiscent of the hotel from the shining, it's not scary, just quaint with strange artwork. Best part was the front desk clerk, that was also room service and the waitress in the restaurant during dinner!

Stayed in: deluxe king. The service is second to none, amazing front desk staff. This hotel has so much character, I loved it. Yes it's old, and is worn in. If you want a sterile, cookie cutter room, stay at the holiday park. If you want a place full of history, this is your place.

This hotel certainly has character! The staff were all very good and tge hotel was clean but very much in need of some redecoration in places. If you are looking for luxury this hotel is not for you but if you want a clean, quiet, no frills kind of place then it's perfect!
