our experience with spaceships was out of the ordinary! Specially the staff members in Christchurch were extremely friendly, helpful and really care about the customers! We can only recommend them!

They had good service leading up to our trip and organised after hours pick up because we had a late flight arriving after midnight. Our spaceship was aptly named the "Millennium Falcon". Unfortunately it worked about as well as the actual Millennium Falcon in the Star Wars movies! We had issues with the speedometer which failed after a few days of travel. When we called on Saturday afternoon we were told we needed to stop in the closest large town/city which happened to be Greymouth and stay there until Monday when we could take it to repairs because nothing was open on a Sunday. So we were stuck in Greymouth for two days (with nothing much to do). We spent most of Monday at the repairs and they couldn't fix the problem without ordering in a new part which would take 7 days. We requested a new vehicle which they said they couldn't do. Eventually it was decided that we would be allowed to continue our journey because the car was assessed to be road worthy in every other respect. We ended up using our GPS as a speedometer! (Thankfully it was free GPS month in February!) A few days later, the speedometer randomly started working again! The rest of the journey was smooth.
We do like spaceships and understand it is a budget option. We have used them once before for 3 weeks with no problems (we did get something minor fixed at Queenstown but it didn't take long -like less than an hour). So I do still recommend it overall. It is a good compact set up. The bed is comfortable and all the cutlery and cooking equipment is included. I like that it is a Tarago because it is as easy to drive as a normal car unlike the big motor homes that are also on the market. It is also much more cost effective in terms of petrol and hire price.
It is a fun experience and I highly recommend it! (Unless you are very tall like 6 foot plus!)response / report this review -

We hired a campervan for two weeks. It was super clean and worked fine. We had some trouble with a check engine light but the roadservice was very helpful and we managed to sort it out. The girl at the Chch office was really nice and fast, very easy to work with. I would definitely recommend this car rental. The only downside is that you need to return the car washed and vacuumed or you're charged $100.

Be careful!!! Or you buy full insurance or they will do as much as possible to take your money!!! Had a terrible experience!! I also rented Apollo and Hertz in Australia and New Zealand and either of them were excellent!!! #avoidspaceships

Did quite a bit of research before booking a car - we were very happy with Spaceships! Didn't go for the cheapest so had a car that was not the newest but in very good condition. Nice and clean, too. After hours drop-off is easy to organise. Lovely staff too in the Christchurch office.
