I was on a road trip with my daughter and her friend, they were really excited about going to Shanty Town. The excitement ended quickly. We thought we would learn about the gold Rush days, after paying exorbitant entry fees, we were on our own, no guided tour, we just walked around looking at old buildings. The steam train is a joke, you get on thinking you are going to have a great train ride only to go a few metres up a track, stop and go back.
Don't waste your money, save it for the hot springs at Franz Josef

We have just been to Shantytown and found it very disappointing. We attended during the school holidays and found the steam train out of action.. the sawmill out of action. And no atmosphere what so ever. The man at the gold panning couldn't be less interested and gave our children no excitement at all about finding their own gold. I would definitely think twice about recommending this to anyone. Surely a historic park like this should try harder.especially the price they charge.

The welcome by the staff member at the entry who took our money was not to good, they had to be prompted to say hello. They did not offer us any info on the place such as there is an audio guide available if you wish etc. The cafe food choice was poor but the coffee was okay. The girl that served us in the ice cream/sweet shop was happy and cheerful. The exhibits were good and it was an enjoyable way to spend a few hours. Just need to work on their customer welcome.

Visiting Shanty Town makes for a real trip down memory lane. The museum in particular with the old dental nurses chair, the iron lung in the hospital area both struck deep chords from the past.Enjoy your visit!

Expensive for what you get. Young children will enjoy the train ride, and mine got to ride in the engine. The demonstration of the mining water cannon was interesting. We found the staff friendly and helpful, especially the train crew.
