This 32km hike is considered along with Milford Sound and Kepler among top 3 in New Zealand and it is absolutely justified. You can run it in a day, but a much more immersive experience would be to hike it so that you can appreciate the splendour of the views and changing landscapes the trail allows you to discover. It is commonly recommended as a 3 days/2 nights hike, however if you are somewhat an experienced hiker/backpacker you may enjoy a slightly faster pace 2 days/1 night, staying over at Mackenzie lake hut or camping site, which is the nicest hut (and view) on the trail with all necessary amenities.
Probably the best walking track in New Zealand if the weather is good
One of the most scenic, spectacular walks I have ever done.
My goal was to make it to Harris Saddle and come back in one day but winter is here and right after Routeburn Falls Hut, the path was covered in ice and since you can't really walk on the side of the track, that was really dangerous. Even with my trekking poles I had to stop there and go back. It was a beautiful day though, cold but no clouds. If you do try to challenge it, you'll probably need more than 2h from this Hut to Harris Saddle, be really careful!
A challenging track to run. It had 4 seasons in one day, and the conditions underfoot always required my full attention! Very rocky, and often slippery when wet, but it's a very scenic area, and the views when not cloudy are spectacular!
Has everything you want in a day hike or multi-day hike. Amazing walk!!
Amazing walk. We had perfect weather. It is well worth hiking!
I did the day trip to Lake Mackenzie and back. Once you passed the trees the view is absolutely amazing! Can highly recommend it.
One of the most scenic hikes in the world. You get to see the enchanted forests (down low), the beautiful alpine scenery (up high), and spectacular valleys in front of you. An unforgettable experience!
