Staff were helpful. It's a pity more local staff are not making themselves available for employment in the season, (which is understandable).

I walked the Routeburn from The Divide, to Earland Falls, and back to Howden Hut. Then took a walk to the back of Lake Howden. That was the first day. Then we walked out again, and went to Key Summit. I thought the Routeburn was amazing, but Key Summit's nature trail is perhaps even better than the Milford Track wetlands.

The hut warden Birgit was very informative, fun to listen to and friendly.

Overall, after just 30 hours in the bush I felt like I'd been on holiday a week. It was a great overnight experience.

During the Great Walks Season, late-October to early-May, the huts are fully operational with water supply, flushing toilets, washbasins, and cold, running water. There is also heating with fuel available and normally a common area with solar lighting. Finally, there will be fuel cooking facilities, but no cooking utensils. You must have a booking to stay in a hut during this season
