Stayed here one night with my wife as part of our road trip around New Zealand's South Island. We were impressed by the investment done in bringing this vintage 1870 hotel up to modern standards while maintaining its historic charm; the shared toilet and bathroom down the hall notwithstanding. We didn't care because we were the only guests that night and we had the entire upstairs to ourselves! The room, bed, and facilities were all clean and comfortable. There was a bit of early-evening noise from the pub below and the traffic in the street. The pub food was good. One suggestion: add a sink in the toilet room so one doesn't have to walk down to the shower room to wash hands after using the toilet. :-)

A quaint old hotel where Bellbirds and Tuis can always be heard. Has a nice outdoor setting for a brew in the sun. Meals served are of a reasonable restaurant standard.

Comfortable pub with fairly good food although $38 for dinner mains is absolutely criminal. I've been to upmarket Italian restaurants in Sydney and never paid anything near that. Unbelievable.

Had a great lunch here. Lovely outside seating areas. The service was good, food came fast. And a nice view to top it all off. One of the only pubs/bars/hotels/restaurants in Christchurch that I know of with grass outside seating areas. About as "British Pub" as you can get in NZ I think!

I think the hotel is 4 stars and restaurant is 3 stars for me. Free laundry if staying 2+ nights which is awesome. Shared bathrooms, but it was never a problem for us. The room was nice, though if you get too hot you have to choose between opening the window and having some road noise or feeling a little warm. The beer on hand was good and the food was just fine.
