I've satayed at meny the hostel in NZ and bazils is a great hostel to stay at. I was here for a month as I loved the family feel to the hostel. The staff are super fun and full of life. The surfing is awesome and if you have the time check out the old ghost road the views are to die for.

this hostel would have been quite good if it wasnt for the lack of hot water in the showers at night in the middle of winter! There was only slightly warm water.

Lovely hostel with a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful decor. I've been wwoofing here for a few days now; the bosses and coworkers are great company and the nearby beaches are amazing for surfing.
On rainy days the lounge is perfect for watching a movie or simply sitting by the fireplace. The only negative are the kiwi busses that regularly stop at this place. However they usually quiet down once they settle into the sofas in the lounge.
On the whole: I'm enjoying my time here a lot :)response / report this review -

Very cool, quirky, hostel that provides all that a hostel should. Don't get lost in the eclectic array of buildings - but if you do make sure to look at all the murals painted on every inch of the building. Plenty of outdoor space to spend time in and an awesome fireplace indoors (I spent most of my time there).
The staff allowed me to pitch my tent in their courtyard which was super awesome. For $15 a night I had full access to all the facilities.
The hostel is pretty quiet during the winter, I was only one of a handful of guests, but every second night a Kiwi experience bus will arrive with 30-40 people, however they arrive in the evening and leave in the morning so I guess it isnt that bad.response / report this review -

Bazils has a very warm and welcoming environment. I came here as a solo traveler and very quickly made friends with the other guests - an unusual occurrence for me. The living room was super cozy in the dead of winter and people are always hanging out in the living room by the fire. The hostel is very close to the beach and people are very keen to surf/help out beginners like me. Also, there is a gym next door that is cheap and you don't need a membership. It's got a squat rack, bench press, plenty of free weights, and a boxing ring. Every other night they sell pizza which is super dank. There are a bunch of cool paintings hanging everywhere and I never had any trouble with the wifi. If you're in Westport you gotta come here.

Love this place! It's a cozy hostel with beautiful murals and a laid back surfer vibe. The owners are super friendly and welcoming! Be sure to get their pizza one night (so delicious) and the back packers special at the Denniston Dog Cafe. They even offer fitness classes--definitely stay here!!

Been traveling New Zealand for just over a month now, and honestly gotta say this place was pretty clean, nice room, good kitchen, and a nice common area to relax. Why 2 stars you ask? Well let me tell ya! The staff were not great. Unfriendly, and really would just make you feel uneasy. Staff would leave halfway through the workday to go surf, while guests showed up, they would be stuck waiting for the manager to show up to check them in after he returned from the surf. The 5 day book, with free surf lesson is a sham, as we booked 5 days and they would not honour it as "We didn't book them all at once." Which is true, the last 3 days were booked after our 2 day stay BUT all days were in succession of each other, and nowhere does it say on the sign of this fictional policy. After lessons were booked, the manager literally had to prompt the staff in front of us to take us to the beach with the boards. Just was awful to be around. If you like being messed around with your pocketbook, being afraid to speak to staff, and love being spoken rudely too then Bazils is the place to stay! As they say "Just Relax" Does not only apply to you but also to the staff!

So disappointed about the service ðŸ˜
My sister and I booked 2 Beds for a night in the morning. We gave our bank cards numbers to make the booking as required.
We had a break down on the way and cancelled way before we were meant to arrived.
The person who answered didn't even ask us how we were but just said that we will have to pay the full price anyway.
Thats is pretty upseting as we are 2 young ladies driving alone around the bush.response / report this review -

5 STARS! Would have given it more if I could! Can't recommend enough
Of the six Kiwi hostels I stayed at this was the best one. I just just felt that it represents everything backpacking stands for. There's an adorable vibe to it which you just can't help but love. I ran into a Discover New Zealand tour bus while there and made lots of friends. It's just a really sociable place, and that more than makes up for the slightly small kitchen area, and fairly basic shower rooms.
I was told before going to Westport that I wouldn't want to stay for long as there was nothing to do there, but I actually wanted to stay longer and would have done if I'd had the time.
Staff at the hostel are very friendly and were very helpful in assisting me getting my mobile phone back after losing it on the coach (!). I'd love to go backresponse / report this review
