My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon and were so happy. The room that we had had an amazing view of the Sounds and we were able to use a double person kayak for free to do some exploring. Kitchen, bedroom and bathroom were all of a high quality. Thank you!

Anakiwa 401 is much more than just a "hostel," it is an excellent self-catering guesthouse (as mentioned in their website description). My wife and I stayed there for three nights in August, during the winter off-season, and we were the only ones there. The setting was peaceful and very relaxing. The hosts were extremely accommodating and made us feel like we were home! Perfect location for kayaking, hiking the QCT, and wine tasting.

It's a very nice hostel that is excellently run. It's a bit pricy, but not crazy, and there are lots of nice touches, like the binder of information and DVDs, the available hot water bottles, the warming blankets, and the hosts' suggestions, like a walk to see glow worms nearby. They also let you use their kayaks for 2 hours for free. It's a good launching or returning point for those doing activities along the Queen Charlotte Track. There's free wifi but it didn't work in the room, just in the living room. They have a laptop there for guests to use if run don't have their own devices. The wifi wasn't super fast but it loaded everything eventually, although i didn't try streaming. There's free instant coffee and tea, and various other foods frozen and for purchase. There's very little in the immediate area, but they have a full kitchen and bbq available for guests' use. There's a small parking lot.
You go to the end of the road and it's on the left at the very end, inside the lot that's marked day parking only. It is after the point when google maps tells you you're there.
The room was tiny, but the shared spaces were big and comfortable.
I'd stay again, but I wish it were a little less expensive, although I wouldn't mind if I were going to be around to use more of the amenities.response / report this review -

Top notch backpackers located to the start / end of Queen Charlotte Track. The atmosphere is very relaxing and cosy. You will love the garden!
The kitchen is very well equipped! This includes a real Espresso machine! The electronic kitchen equipment is very new and up to date. Also the bathroom! Very new and very clean.
You can get free kayaks and if you are lucky you can explore the bays while dolphins are there. There are glow worms within a 10 minutes walk.

Very clean hostel!
Nice kitchen, nice rooms, nice living room (with books, games, Billard) and there are free kayaks and bikes which is very cool.
And the owners are so friendly
It was a great time there!!
We loved to stay in this hostel and it was really one of the best hostels on our nz-trip!!response / report this review
