Lovely food. Lovely staff we are welcomed back and remembered even though we only visit from out of town a couple of times a year
I've been dining at Ake Ake regularly over the past year and rate it as one of the top restaurants in Northland. The food is perfection and their Ake Ake brewed Pinot Gris and Wild Rose wines are superb. Would recommend. Well worth the drive from Whangarei.
The only way to sum up this restaurant is SUPERB. By far and away the best that Northland has to offer. Knowledgeable and polite staff serve honest yet impeccably cooked and presented dishes in a warm and cosy atmosphere. We arrived on a cold and blustery night and left with a warm, contented glow. New to the area, we will be back on a regular basis.
Terrible - I had booked a table in advance for lunch at 12pm for a birthday celebration. The website says the 'Cellar Door' open for wine tastings at 10.30am so we turned up at 11am.
Signs were out but door was closed and locked. A lady (believed to be the Duty Manager) was inside, saw us and came to the doors frowning, clearly annoyed their were actual guests wanting to get in. She opened up saying it wasn't open yet, 11:30am would be better (meaning come back later) We were shocked and weren't going anywhere. She reluctantly let us in but said " Have you booked?" and then "well we are going to start vacuuming and cleaning now so." As we were trying to stay in a good mood we said that's fine we will sit down and wait. She was not pleased and made a call to the 'wine tasting guy' who did turn up several minutes later. Meanwhile I asked twice if they could light the fire, which eventually got done. It was dark and gloomy inside, including the atmosphere. We heard music coming from the kitchen and two people arguing -
- the 'F' word was dropped twice adding to the already awkward atmosphere. The wine tasting man was actually pleasant and did his thing. After that, we bought a bottle of wine then after some discussion between ourselves decided we wouldn't stay for lunch as planned as our moods had altered to reflect the surroundings so we told the waitress we were going to leave. Really disappointing and shocking. Off we went to Marsden Estate Vineyard which was absolutely fabulous in every sense of the word. While we were lunching there, I saw that I had received a phone call (at 1pm) from the Duty Manager from Ake Ake Restaurant, rather annoyed asking why we had not shown up for lunch at 12pm as per our booking.
Hello??? need I say more?
P.S I had to rate this place at least one star or it wouldn't allow me to post my review. they do not deserve one star.
Staff were friendly and helpful, our meal was very tasty.
Lovely meal
Nice surroundings
Well presented
Good Service
Good wines. Restaurant was closed even though it was 11am but wine tasting was open.
Typical New Zealand winery. Decent wines and half the staff were great the other half seemed annoyed we showed up and wanted to order their (rather generic) cheese board to go with our wine.
Had a great time. Great food great hosting.
best hosting from all your crew. Well done and highly recomended to anyone to try. Thank you ake ake team
