I was late to arrive at Lukla and late to leave. Weather is often a problem here. The airport is famous for being one of the most dangerous in the world and for me it was a big part in my decision to fly in to start the Everest base camp trek.

Tenzing-Hillary airport or Lukla airport is gateway to the everest/khumbu region for the domestic & foreign trekkers, climbers and explorers. Having a short runway (527 m/1,729 ft) and situated in high altitude(2,845m/9,334 ft) where the weather is never certain makes this airport the most dangerous. But everything is fine with experienced pilots and proper weather forecasters. Only small planes (twin otter) lands and takes off from here. Flying to this airport is a lifetime experience.

Gateway to the Everest region. One of the most dangerous airports in the world because of its treacherous terrain and ever changing weather conditions. The runway is sloping such that you have to land uphill and take-off downhill. To add to that, one end of runway is a cliff and the other end a 2000 ft drop. Truly Hilarious.

Most people trying to visit Mount Everest fly through here. It's considered the world's most dangerous airport because of the treacherous weather and the short sloped runway. If you're trying to fly in here, be patient, as delays can last days.

They didn't say it's the most dangerous airport for no reason. Runway is short and the airport can handle (park) only four small planes at a time. Clouds covers the runway pretty quickly leading to the shutdown of the whole airport. Apart from that, check-ins could be chaotic at times.

Most dangerous table top airport. With mountain weather, too frequent cancelations. Very basic amenities. Creepy to see a plane crashed and parked there because you can't salvage it. With frequent flight cancelation might be chopper cartel too, you never know. If someone tells you it's an hour walk down to chopper in case flight is delayed, make sure you are pretty fit and ready to climb down and walk for twice that time.

World most dangerous and extrime airport if pilot going to landing must keep storng himself otherwise no way to aircraft overshoot.its very dangerous .

Kathmandu to Lukla ( 2804 m ) by flight. Small aircrafts and helicopters operate during the season depending on weather. During this May more than 400 mountaineers will attempt the summit.
The route to Everest Base Camp & Kalapathar is popular with trekkers too. From Kalapathar summit ( 5600 m ), there is good view of Mt. Everest. The well defined route is crowded with mountaineers, trekkers and the people who assist them in climbing.
More than 4469 people ascended to 8848 m Mt. Everest and 282 people died during their attempt till 2016.
Lukla - Namche bazar ( 3440 m, 20 km, 4 hour trek. Syangboche air strip is nearby ) - Tengboche ( 5 hour ) - Pheriche ( 4243 m, 10 km, 5 hour ) - Lobuje ( 4930 m, 10 km, 3 hour ) - Gorak shep ( 3 hour ) - Everest Base Camp ( 3 hour trek from Lobuje ) : 8 day return trek.response / report this review -

Spooky and wonderful airport. While you wait for your flight (airplane or helicopter) you will have time to appreciate the abilities of the pilots landing in this small field. Remember this is a weather-permitting runway, you should have extra-money/days just in case, if you need to wait for your plane/helicopter landing/departing.

Trekking in Sagarmatha national park needs permit from government, we will arrange these permits before your arrival. You can stay in Kathmandu for couple of days doing sightseeing or we can fly straight to Lukla. Here is a brief day to day typical itinerary that I suggest my guests.
