I'm not a big fan Sauraha - haphazardly developed tourist trap of a town thst is detrimental to the jungle environs of Chitwan National Park. But, if you must stay here, then Sapana Village Lodge is probably the best place. The lodge is located slightly outside of the ugly town centre (a definite boon!) and is built with a lot of character and features a lovely garden. The staff are friendly and food decent. Slightly more expensive than the backpackers' joints dotting Sauraha. There are few other 'upscale' places in Sauraha but they don't have the same character and ambiance of Sapana and thus are rather bland.

Lots of attention to detail. Really impressed by what they are doing in the community. And of course watching elephants walk through the lodge and bathe in the small river. Lots of birds too. Very relaxing with wonderful staff.

We stayed at Sapana for 3 nights. One of them we slept at one of the villages nearby. Local girls took us fishing and showed us local culture. We also did a walking safari at Chitwan National Park. The guide was arranged by Sapana and was very good. The room is great. The food is great. The staff is great. The social work they are doing is amazing. I'm still so thrilled that we had the pleasure of staying at such an wonderful place. 5 stars actually feels like not enough. Highly recommended.

Situated 1.5km north of Sauraha, this serene lodge is an excellent option for anyone, but especially those with an interest in Tharu culture. Set up by its dedicated owner with the aim of supporting the local Tharu community, particularly a local school, it promotes various activities that bring Tharu and tourists together, in addition to the usual wildlife activities.
This includes village walking tours, planting rice in the fields, fishing trips and classes in cooking and art. Not surprisingly, the rooms are decked out in charming village-style designs with vibrant paintings and rugs. The outstanding al-fresco lounge and restaurant overlooking the Budhi Rapti River and rice paddies is one of the best spots to eat or drink in Sauraha. Stunning hotel, as long as you're not expecting The Ritz. Elephants literally walk through the grounds, the food is good and the staff are extraordinarily friendly

Wonderful place for kids with great views of the elephants playing in the river, including the first retired elephant. Lovely staff - we spent six nights here and felt so at home and safe. They promote better elephant treatment and support the local community. Highly recommend it.

The lodge is located and overlooks the outskirts of a small village. Eating lunch while overlooking elephants being cleaned in the small stream nearby is wonderful. Unfortunately in the winter there is too much fog in the mornings to take in the views.
Having all of your activities organised for you is wonderful, but unless you're staying for an extra night there is no time to make use of the beautiful gardens, hammocks, or 'coffee hut'.
Between activities you are dropped off at the lodge where the only option for lunch is the lodge's own restaurant, which is somewhat overpriced, considering the price you are already paying for your rooms.
The rooms are large, but for the time we stayed here the hot water did not work in the mornings.
The free wifi does not reach past the reception.
The staff are some of the most friendly and helpful I have come across on my trip. They'll drive you to and from all of your activities and make sure you are well looked after.response / report this review -

This place is absolutely beautiful. Comfy rooms. Staff is awesome and very helpful with making any arrangements for activities. Food is tasty and their prices are reasonable. I would highly recommend.

Great location with elephants that walk around during the day. Food was good, prices reasonable but on the expensive end. A very neat place to stay with the national park being very close by. Staff is very friendly and helpful.
