Oh what an incredible experience it is to visit this beautiful monastery. We were fortunate to visit when a puja (ceremony) was taking place. The temple was filled with monks and nuns chanting. The sound being played over loud speakers was just magical. We visited Kopan via an arranged tour which included spending a couple of hours with a senior monk. An added bonus was the view of Kathmandu Valley.

One of the city's most important monasteries, what you should know before visit it:

    - It is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery.
    - ‎Is fare away from downtown, but taxi is not expensive, about 700-900 nrp (download offline the map, the road is a laberint).
    - ‎Amazing panorama view of Kathmandu.
    - ‎Free entrace.
    - ‎There are a market and souvenir shop inside.
    - ‎The monastery has become especially famous for teaching Buddhism to visiting Western foreigners.
    - ‎Bring your snacks, there are benchs where sit and eat quitely.

    I recommend visit this place.

Amazing place with incredible people, both the monks and the visitors that come from all over the world. There's a good book store, and the view is great.

A place of immense spiritual power. A visit to the relic house will reveal the relics from the funeral pyres of realised beings. May change your life.

I came to learn more about Buddhism and left feeling more self aware. Met amazing people. I stayed at Kopan for the duration of the course, 4 nights. I would bring healthy snacks such as fruits if you like to eat more frequently otherwise food is served 3 times a day. Also, there is a cafe that serves good filtered coffee and food. I liked the bookstore/library, things are reasonably priced compared to Thamel. Also, don't forget your towel, soap and toilet paper if you use it. Great place to learn.

Great if you're here on a Buddhist pilgrimage, skip if you want scenery or a cultural site, or if going without a good guide. Timings to see the hall are limited so try to find out from your guide beforehand (can be a test of how good your guide is. I missed the visit cos my guide didn't even know the timings..). Getting there is long and tedious because of the roads. The place is serene and quiet because there is absolutely nothing there

Don't fall for it. I was there for the: "Discover Buddhism" course, and I left after 4 days. The two so-called teachers were telling the strangest things: "If you're born with a disability then that's karma because in previous life you must have done something wrong, therefore you must suffer now." However, today much of this can be treated and suffering is not always necessary.

Furthermore, they claim there is no such thing as a soul, only the mind. However, today science - and more specifically, quantum physics, has proven the existence of soul in human body.

It is not just the fact that there is constant noise from the ongoing construction work, the lack of basic essentials such as toilet paper, or even that everything is hugely overpriced in their shop. No. The mere fact that the "teachers" had no idea what they were talking about most of the time, at times would contract each other and often ignored questions, are the main reasons for the poor quality of the course.

It is therefore no surprise that I, and some others with me, decided to no longer waste our time.

I have just finished a 10 day Mindfulness course at Kopan. Seriously, this place is amazing. The energy, the peace, the ability to learn and meditate and grow. I am grateful beyond words, thank you Kopan.
