There are legends that explain how Lord Shiva was roaming the forests as a deer and when the gods came down looking for him they recognized him and “captured” him by holding onto the horns. The horn broke into three pieces and the spot where Brahma buried his piece is where the temple is located. The inscriptions found at Gokarneshwor temple, which in its current form was built in 1582 AD by a Gopiran Bharo, describes the origins of the spot well before the Lichhavi period and informs us that the place was of great significance even before them.

In late August or early September people go to this temple to bathe and make offerings in honor of their fathers, living or dead, on a day called Gokarna Aunsi.

You can breath the air of an ancient time here. Easy to reach by foot from kopan monastery, around 45 minutes.

This low-key temple complex is upriver from Pashupatinah and therefore is nearly as holy. There are a few buildings to explore and a number of cool statues outside.

For a peaceful walk, start at Bouddha then go up to Kopan and through the hills to Gokarneshwor Mahadev. You won't regret it.
