The "Machiindranath" deity of Lalitpur Bungmati village is one of the important deities of the valley. it is beleived that Machhindranath was invited to Nepal on the advice of expert Tantriks to rescue the coun try from a severe drought in the ancient time. Folks believe that a devastating draught hit the country for 12 years. The court Tantrks advised the people of Nepal to bring lord Machhenindranath to the valley to avert the disaster. heeding to the Tantriks advice, King Narendra Dve of Bhaktapur accompainsed by a local "Jyapu" from Lalitpur, a Tantrik from Kathmandu and the Karkotak Naga residing in the Taudaha, went to Kamarup-Kamachhe in India's Assam. They succeeded in tricking Macchindranath the youngest amoung the 100 sons of demon King Shashi, and brought him to Nepal. The drought spell ended after the arrival of Macchindranath in Nepal.
The idol of Machhindranath is traditionally placed at Bungmati for 6 months and at Patan's Tabahal for 6 months. Machhindranath is taken from Lalitpur to Bungamati every year along with a chariot procession. This is also the biggest festival of Lalitpur. The deity is again returned to Patan towards the start of the winter season at the auspicious hour as advised by the astrologers. Bus station for Bungamati. The place (Bungamati) itself is an old village where still old buildings are there as well as some temples.
