If you want a comprehensive history of Nepal while at a tranquil, out of the bustling city, this is the place to visit. Thoroughly enjoyed my experience and to top it of the tickets are around $1
It is situated in front of the military museum and it has a parking space in front of the military museum. The National Museum is divided into three major areas ranging from Nepal's historical artifacts, Lord Buddha artifacts, ecological, human evolution, and different tribes of Nepal artifacts. It is covered in a small area with limited equities like a washroom but no drinking areas or cafeterias are available. It has a few sitting chairs in the open space and there are lovers at the entrance. You need to pay the mobile charges too if you want to click the photo by mobile. The museum is small but equipped with good artifacts with proper information.
I was absolutely mesmerized by the works of art in the museum. There are different rooms which depict the architecture and lifestyle of the 18th century. There are enormous colourful canvas, amazing sculptures, exquisite silver and gold jewellery and even kings and queens´ garments.
This is a must visit place in the Valley.
The National Museum has 3 buildings to visit. Kids will enjoy visiting the place. Combine National Museum visit together with Military museum which is opposite to the National museum. Need to pay extra fee if you want to take pictures inside the museum. The garden is beautiful. The place gets crouded during public holiday.

Nepal is the name given to the region of magnificent mountain ranges of the Himalayas and thin stretch of plain lands on its south between the east meridians and the south parallels. The country with elongated rectangle shape lying along the slopes of the mighty Himalayas nearly all along its northern frontiers. Nepal has over 240 peaks above 20,000 ft. above sea level and the queen of these is Sagarmatha (Mount Everest), the highest mountain in the world. The territory of Nepal from east to west is about five hundred miles long and the breadth is between one hundred to one hundred and forty miles. Nepal is well- known all over the world as a land of Gautam Buddha, the light of Asia, who was born in Lumbini grove in sixth century B.C.
Amazing place to see ancient piece. The whale teeth although look like cemented but its a real they say. Awasome park ,ancient pieces are the centre of attraction. Really amazing experience with friends
In this museum we can see the old coins of Nepal. And the many kinds of weapons of war. Near this there is another museum called military museum. That place also you can visit. It's very interesting.
A very good museum in kathmandu. If you really want to see historical artworks , sculpture and paintings , this place is the best example as you can find there statues, paintings, murals, coins and weapons. The main attractions are collection of historical artworks (sculpture and paintings) and a historical display of weapons used in the wars in the 18-19th century. Very good place. Really liked it.
National Museum with ancient history and arts of Nepal. Unknown place for most of the people but it's a palce worth visit. There you can observe old machine guns, handguns, pistol, rifle, canon and old vehicles from 1970's. Best way to demonstrate to students of social will be through it.
Nepal’s National Museum is located a short walk south of Swayambhunath temple, and
directly across Museum Road from the Nepal Army’s more modern Military Museum. There, at the end of a long white wall, you’ll find the ticket booth and the old museum’s main entrance gate. Chhauni means ‘Parade Ground’, and it was there in 1928 AD that this intriguing museum was first established. At first it was called the ‘Chhauni Silkhana’ and the original displays, mostly armaments, were housed in an historic old palace constructed decades earlier by Bhimsen Thapa (1775-1839). Thapa was Nepal’s second prime minister under the Shah kings, and is considered a great national hero of the country.
The original name, ‘Chhauni Silkhana’, literally meant ‘the stone house of arms and ammunitions’. For the first decade it was closed to the public and shown only to dignitaries, foreign scholars and other guests of the prime minister. The collection of armaments and other ancient items served the Ranas as a show-piece. In 1938, Prime Minister Juddha Shamsher J.B. Rana opened it to the public, and had a second building constructed for an art museum, which he named after himself: the ‘Juddha Jatiya Kalashala’. In 1967 the whole complex was given its current name, ‘Rastriya Sangrahalaya’, the National Museum of Nepal.
Treasures in hiding. This National Museum is absolutely neglected, but it contains all kind of states and artifacts worth seeing, Unfortunately, their security is almost non-existing, so I am afraid for the beautiful pieces they
exhibit. Usually, this museum is not part of the tour packages, if you are an art lover you need to request a visit or ask a taxi to take you.
One of the city's most important museum, what you should know before visit it:
- It's a complex with three museums: Juddha Jayatia Kala Shala, Buddha Art Gallery and Natural Historical Section.
- It's the largest museum of the country.
- Single ticket is 150nr and 100nr more to take pictures.
- You should spend half day here. Museums are not so big, but they have an amazing item collection.
- Bring some snacks, there are benchs where you can sit and eat.
- In front of the National Museum there is other museum, The Militar Museum.
I highly recommend visit this place.

A good collection of religious artifacts and one building full of terrible taxidermy and other natural history items. Rs. 150 entry fee for foreigners. It's worth a visit.
The place is very nice.It reflect about the war and other contribution given by our brave soldiers in past. The museum contains the old weapon , clothes, money and other many things used by our warriors like prithivi narayan shah, kalu padey, balbhadra kunwar etc. The museum consists of painting of our history. The one who visit here will surely be impressed and feel proud.
An average collection at best. Not offering much in terms of history. it has some dolls wearing costumes from all over the world and a section on funny (convex/ concave mirrors). Could give it a skip
So much information can be gathered.. much of Rana and Shah historical objectsyes preserved animal remains were nice including vehicles too. A day to be remembered here, if you opt to go both sides in a same day.
Huge museum. Loved it
Wow that was amazing. though usually I pass through it's vicinity had never been there. finally I went there and I trembled with joy and nearly cried. I've no words to express. only 4stars because of the poor management and aged frail buildings with no renovations. ..
