An excellent trip from Flam where we called on our cruise. There is very little else at Flam, but you can walk around the small harbour and up a very good path leading to a nice hillside with great views of the village. You can also walk up a path which follows the route of the railway and there are a couple of small settlements en route, on of which has a delightful little church which was all but washed away in a river flood a few years ago.
The Flam Railway is a bit of a 'must' when in the area. The train is comfortable and warm (in winter) and there is a good commentary on board. The scenery is spectacular and includes many fantastic waterfalls. There is a short photography stop at the Klosflossen waterfall, but when we were there (3rd May) it was completely frozen. I'd love to see it in full flood later in the year. Heading out of Flam the best views are from seats on the right hand side. We bought our tickets on the day from the ticket office in Flam. The cost is about £45 return and the trip is about an hour each way. The first departure of the day was fully booked by cruise excursion passengers so we booked the late morning one with no trouble. Doing it this way is MUCH CHEAPER than signing up for a cruise excursion. The trip is exactly the same except that the cruise excursion party calls at a hotel where they are served a waffle! The cruise excursion cost is extortionate so I'd urge anyone who fancies the railway trip to book it themselves like we did.

Definitely worth it if you have Children. A nice scenic ride with great views. If you want to get any good photos at the stops, hustle off. There is nothing else to see or buy and the stops are very quick.

One thing I believe you can do is train up and then bike back down I'd recommend looking into this on a nice day!

Great scenary on this 20km journey. Nothing at Flam other than a coffee house though so you won't need to spend much time there.

A must do experience. I'd go in Spring as all the waterfalls are frozen in the Winter

Pretty awesome that this train was pretty old and still in service. Really loud outside the train when in motion. Be sure to close the windows when going through a tunnel since it gets loud and bats can fly in. Otherwise it's a gorgeous view of Norway and some of its waterfalls. If going uphill be sure to sit on the right side. Most of the gorgeous views are on this side.
