Even if you only can make it in to see the volcano in the day it is totally worth while. You may not get to see the lava but you can hear the roar of it bubbling in the crater. The view of the rock walls is stellar. Great for a family trip.

This lake was quite a bit warmer than other lakes I've visited. It was too hot to swim and the dog refused to play fetch in it. However, the light and the heat meant I did not have to build a bonfire or use a lantern to read at night, so it gets one star for that. Still, I would not take another jet ski excursion here.

Really cool view at night right now with an eruption only a few months ago, lava was still visible! Great view and really close. Drove up in a private car and spent $10 a person. The lines are long to drive up so be prepared to wait a long time. We waited outside the main gate then again halfway up.

Went for the night tour and it was a great experience. If you're driving try to arrive before 5pm and park in the line along the highway. First group drives to the crater at 6pm. Nice visitors center with a museum and clean restrooms.

Got there about mid day. The sun was shining. There was a cool effect with the sun and the smoke at the mouth of the volcano, could see some spectacular rock patterns as you glanced in along the sides, but couldn't see much besides smoke when glancing towards the middle. The trails along the ridges were nice. It was warm out but sipping on water and a bit of a refreshing breeze made it tolerable. The smoke was blowing away from where we were so we mostly had fresh air. Got some decent photos. Will have to dig them out of hiding sometime and post a few.

Disregard all local guides placing reviews. They just want to make the easiest buck whilst providing the shittiest experience.
The promise:
Lava during sunset, beautiful views, an amazing experience! $20 per person and you go up with the two of you to see lava! You’ll be back by 6:30 to 7!
The result:
Being packed in a mini bus with 15 people after a 5 minute ride to the outer edges of Grenada with the two of us. A 20 minute ride to the park entrance. A 60-90 minute wait in the bus at the edge of the park before you enter. Seeing the sunset out of a minibus with 15 other privileged backpackers. Finally up there, getting 15 minutes to check out the smoke pit where you can hardly see any lava. Being whistled back to the bus like a bunch of dogs and then a lovely ride back for 40 minutes. Back by 08:30, free at last.
The upsides:
Airco in the bus.
A beautiful full moon.
In short, the worst $20 I spent in Nicaragua.response / report this review -

Couldn't see much as it was rainy and foggy. Better to let the passengers know when they are entering the park.

Good experience by night. I was happy to see a volcano by night. Pretty awesome. However, we had to wait a long time and there's not much to do once you've seen the giant hole with lava.
