Church of God
Oldest and first church in town. Big capacity and historic place.
Built with stone walls and offers a nice architectural backdrop in the environment
Serene environment. Cool hospitality.
The church was established by a young and daring Canadian-born missionary, Rev. Tommie Titcombe in 1908. Titcombe braved the dangers of malaria, typhoid, stings and possible death to take the gospel to the then unreached yagba land.
Egbe, a refuge (fortified with high walls) town was the only community in the region which accepted Titcombe and gave him a hut in the town. He became friends with the king and the children from whom he learnt to speak the local dialect within a short time.
Titcombe faced stiff opposition from the chief sorcerer in the town who challenged him to a rain-making show during a terrible drought. The rain only fell when Titcombe prayed. Titcombe also dropped a young girl who was levitating flatly in mid air at about a meter above the ground.
Many more wonders were said to have taken place. The gospel spread to the neighbouring communities and converts grew. The church building was erected with the help of the youth and still stands strongly till date. Titcombe later went to Canada and returned with a bride, Ethel.
Ethel helped to abolish the killing of twins in the community.
Titcombe's legacy later grew into the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) which has spread all over Africa. The community recently celebrated the centenary of Titcombe's legacy, his grand children were in attendance.
