Posada del Abuelito is one of the best hostels I've stayed at in Mexico. I spent six nights there on my recent solo adventure through Chiapas and it really was a wonderful, charming, cozy and inviting place that felt like a home.
There was beautiful vegetation and gardens around the hostel's common areas, two relaxing courtyards with seating around them (perfect place to spend the evenings), a cute and well-equipped kitchen with utensils, cookware, appliances, etc., a book exchange, and a cozy room with couches and a fireplace for those chilly evenings.
The breakfasts were fantastic and delicious and there was scrambled eggs, a variety of fresh fruit like pineapples, bananas, papayas, watermelon, cantaloupe melons and more, fresh fruit juice, and their homemade jam with bread along with coffee and tea. Tea bags were always available and free in the kitchen as well.
I stayed in the 4-bed female dorm which was situated along the edge of the main courtyard. It was clean and cozy and the wooden bunks had comfortable mattresses, pillows and a warm thick blanket. The lockers were located underneath the bunks and they provide you with a key (no need to bring your own combination lock). The ensuite washroom with shower inside the room was convenient as well and the water was hot!
I loved the relaxed vibe and social atmosphere of the hostel and made some good friends there. The staff were super friendly, accommodating and helpful as well and there was always someone available in reception. You can book tours and transportation with the staff and they have a whole book of activities and day trips they recommend in the area which was awesome. They have free luggage storage and they let me leave my extra bags there while staying in Palenque for two days and then returning to the hostel, which I really appreciated.
Location-wise, the hostel was situated on a quiet street in a peaceful neighbourhood about a 10-minute walk from the central area. There was lots of really cool street art in the area around the hostel which was fun to discover and photograph. As a solo female traveler, I felt completely safe wandering around this neighbourhood during the day and after dark.
I would recommend this hostel to anyone traveling to San Cristobal. I loved my time there and can't wait until I can return to the city and stay here again.response / report this review -

Very cozy common areas, nice breakfast compared to all other hostels I've stayed at in Mexico. Location would be better if closer to the city center, but still close enough that I walked to the city center several times per day while staying there without any noticeable effort. Staff was incredibly nice and helpful: My wife was sick during our stay, and they accommodated by letting us check out later, cleaning our room earlier, as well as making herbal tea (free of charge). They mostly speak Spanish, though.

The stay in the hostel was really nice. I stayed in a double room with bathroom for one night, the only downside was that hot water is only available in the shared bathrooms. The next night I stayed in a double room without bathroom, which was even cheaper than getting 2 bunk beds. The service was very nice and we also booked an awesome day tour at the hostel.

The location isn't great, being quite a walk from the center of town. Further, the staff (other than the cleaning ladies who are all lovely) are incredibly rude and unhelpful. After asking simple questions like "is there a bakery nearby where I can buy a cake?" I get "what a peculiar question" as answer. The night guy is abrasive and rude and spends his entire shift lying on the sofa playing games on his phone with the volume allllll the way up, right outside the dorms. The 10 bed dorm was narrow and crowded- with little space to put your bag. Would not recommend.

The place is clean and quiet and has a great breakfast. I had a little issue with the owner who accused me of having a party in there one night when I was fast asleep at 10pm Always during my stay I felt a bit uncomfortable so I left earlier and went to another hostel for the rest of my stay in San Cristóbal.

This hostel/hotel is situated around 10 mins fast walk from Zocalo in a safe and clean area. Its one of the oldest one around.
The hostel is amazing - once you enter the feeling is very warm and fuzzy. Rooms, common area are all too good. The hotel guests range from very young to older lot.
The facilities in kitchen for cooking are fantastic.

Great picturesque hostel. Clean and has all the necessities. Definitely not a party hostel but you are able to meet fellow travelers. They also have a variety of tours as well.

A little out of the way but with nice rooms, great service, working kitchen fully equipped. Tea and coffee available all the time, super breakfast and nice grounds. Completely recommend.

Clean, comfortable rooms, friendly and helpful staff, great breakfast, strong wifi, really warm blankets (it gets cold in San Cristobal). Hot showers. No complaints.
