You can learn a lot about amber here. How they are found, extracted and made.
You can also find out how to distinguish between real and fake amber.
Also there is a store on ground floor which you can buy real amber with good price.

We'll worth the $25 to get in. The building itself is quite attractive and the exhibits are very well put together to exhibit an interesting range of Amber pieces. Kids of the right age will get excited by the bugs stuck in many of the pieces while adults can enjoy the artistry and craft. The museum is open until 8, which is nice as many close much earlier.

The museum of amber tells you a story of the only precious and semi-precious stone of plant origin in the world. It is part of a residual plant resin of trees dating from 25 to 40 million years that over time underwent a process of fossilization forming irregular masses. Undoubtedly a wealth for Mexico and Chiapas that delights not very well-known vital processes.

MONEY SCAM in the ‘museum shop’. After spending half an hour in a small room they call a museum, we went downstairs to shop at their Amber shop. My mother bought earrings for 500 pesos, and gave a 1000 pesos bill to the girl who was the shop assistant. 5 minutes later, after waiting for the earrings to be packed, my mother (who doesn’t speak Spanish) was just given her nicely packed earrings, but no change. The girl pretended not to understand what my mother wanted from her!! Then I approached and since I spoke Spanish and I saw my mother giving the assistant the 1000 bill (which I stated in Spanish) the girl suddenly ‘understood’ that she ‘made a mistake’ and gave us 500 back. I have read about money scams like that in Mexico, but I did not expect it in a museum.the whole ‘museum’ is basically one small room with some amber in it, and it just felt like it was not a real museum (=place of learning and education) but just a business scheme to make you buy amber at their shop and ‘forget’ to give you the change.

Small, but interesting and for 25 pesos I think it's worth it to learn a bit about amber and see some interesting pieces. All explanations are in Spanish.

Small but very interesting to visit and learn some. Also has one of extremely rare scorpions in Amber so that's very cool to see. And a beautiful and historic building.
