Small airport, typical of most African countries. Staff was friendly, I was quite amazed to see that there were no checks though for Ebola screening seeing that there is currently a huge outbreak in neighbouring DRC. Having just flown from Lesotho where they at least did a handheld temp scan that is a little concerning. They do manual luggage searches at random and body searches. So be prepared for that and just go with the flow. Being stroppy in Africa gets you nowhere. Airtel and TNM are local mobile providers. Make sure you turn mobile data off before inserting the prepaid voucher, and sometimes the APN settings do not automatically load on your device causing you not to be able to use your data you will have to enter it manually. This could be a nightmare to troubleshoot as the locals had no idea what the issue was.

It is a small, quiet and clean airport that serves Northern Malawi. Shops are few but you wont miss finding Mzuzu coffee in most of them. I noticed that most of the airlines arrive and depart around the same time. It is quite far from Lilongwe so it would be wise to plan your transfers well. Fortunately, there is no traffic in Malawi to worry about.

Small airport. Tips: better exchange rates than in town. Get a SIM
card ($1) for internet access. If the Airtel office is closed, get it at the kiosk.

I was here briefly. the first impression about officials here was distasteful..asking for 'soda money' from passengers? No! such acts are disgraceful! The airport could benefit from major improvements in how officials relate with travelersthey should turn professional.

Indeed its irritating that after going thru the scanner your hand luggage is physically searched
And the are also physically patting even after passing the scanner without a beep
Scanner at the entrance not working
Hope they can improve passenger and air security
Some officials ask for "soda money"! Underpaid?
