The pagoda seems to be popular because it's big and used to be accessible for climbing (not possible now). But the whole area looks a bit abandoned

One of the most convenient place to see sun rise. The sun rises quickly. You should come here at around 5am to catch perfect moment.

Excellent sunrise pictures near this location. Telephoto and tripod are a must for picking out those amazing landscapes. Sunset isnt a great experience during dry season as the roads are dusty and all the tourist buses cart people to sunset vistas. But if you wait for the blue hour when luckily everyone has gone you maybe rewarded with some good photo opportunities. You'll have to look hard for that sunset picture which we found was at least 1km east of Bagan.

The Shwesandaw pagoda is one of the taller pagodas in Bagan, an imposing structure visible from far away rising from the plains of Bagan with its height of 328 feet.

The Shwesandaw was built in 1057 by King Anawrahta, founder of the Bagan Kingdom. Anawrahta wanted to further Buddhism in his empire. To this end he requested Manuha, King of the Mon Kingdom of Thaton, to be given a copy of the Tripitaka, the Buddhist teachings.

In 1057, after Manuha’s refusal, Anawrahta invaded Thaton. Upon is return after the successful conquest, he had the Shwesandaw pagoda built to enshrine hair relics of the Buddha, which he had brought back from Thaton. Before 2017 earthquake people can climb to the pagoda to see sunset. Not it's banned from climbing the pagoda.

Nice. Not so crowded now as it's under reconstruction and restoration thus not allowed to climb up. There is a sleeping Buddha next to it which is quiet old and beautiful.

Way too crowded for my liking. It may be the highest but it's not the coolest. Don't be mainstream, get off the beaten track and find yourself another pagoda that gives you the views + tranquility you need when watching the sunrise or sunset.

One of many beautiful temples in Bagan. Very steep steps and super crowded and touristy during sunsets or sunrise. Do not recommend for sunset or sunrise given the many other choices you have in Bagan.

Be prepared for a very steep climb, but the views from the top tier are well worth the effort (as long as you are fairly agile and not afraid of heights).

Good view but it's so crowded here. There are plenty of other pagodas with less people and equally good view from the top. Not good for sunset since you have all the buses and parking lot in the picturebetter for sunrise.

It is under repairing the top part of pagoda but it is the best palace to feel the sunrise and sunset of ancient city

Very crowded but it's so nice! The views are amazing and it's definitely worth a visit. Just be mindful and respectful and adhere by the rules. It's a sunrise/sunset spot for you, but it's sacred to the people so it'd be good to show some respect.

Nice. But busy. If you're going for sunrise or sunset. Get here early. Personally you're better off finding a smaller temple for sunrise. Will be a more relaxed experience!

Even if it's one of the most popular sunrise spot and overcrowded, it's definitely one of the best and one is able to find a good position to observe the hot balloons.

I visited this place some years ago, so it was very different from today's crowded attraction. It's a wonderful place, so try to make this visit one you want to remember as a nice and enjoyable experience.

Also known as "the view deck pagoda," this pagoda is a very popular place for tourists to watch either sunrise or sunsets at Bagan, to the point that it gets crowded.

Like all pagodas, you have to walk barefoot towards the upper part of it, and take note, the stairways are pretty steep and challenging.

Overall, it's "a must visit."

Great view. Easy access so lots of tourists. We came for sunrise and was there one hour before that, so got a good spot. You really need to come early, but it's also very romantic standing in the early morning just before sunrise. Very steep stairs.

Can't beat this view. I know it is super touristy but there are sometimes good reasons things are so popular. Get there early to secure a spot up front. Most of the temples are under repair due to earthquakes and this one offers a high view. They need more security to stop people from climbing higher and respect the restoration process.
