No visit to the Union of Myanmar is complete without a visit to the 2,500 years old Shwedagon Pagoda, which enshrines strands of Buddha's hair and other holy relics. A taxi from downtown shouldn't cost more than 2500 MMK. When you enter they'll ask you for a donation to store your shoes but you can just grab a bag and carry them around for free. If you see someone coming out with a sticker consider asking them for it to avoid the entrance fee of 8000 MMK for foreigners. Once inside, some locals might offer you info or a tour for a fee or donation. Do what you will. Otherwise, walk around and just enjoy the opulent and peaceful interior.

The most famous and spectacular sight in Yangon. Thousands of years old, over 300ft tall and covered in fold, jewels and precious stones. It it one of the most important sites in the Buddhist faith. I don't know how you might miss going here if you are in Yangon but I highly recommend it.

Best religious place to visit in city. Need to ware decent cloths esp for females. Don't forget to cover your legs and back, shoulder. pay respect to buddha. I feel peaceful every time I go there. There are ATMs, Money changers, free wifi.

A world renowned pagoda. Non Burmese are not allowed inside the pagoda
But there is a lot to see around it. It is a fascinating complex. You could spend hours hanging out. There is an amazing silence that envelopes the entire complex. There may be hundreds of people around. But not a word. In comparison to a Hindu temple which could be cacophonous.
