We really enjoyed the majority of our three day trek from Kalaw to Inle Lake but there were a few drawbacks and issues that the company may want to think about as they move forward.
While our guide, Aung, was wonderful, we were stuck in a group with 9 Germans and the two of us, Americans. Whenever there were decisions to be made as a group, the German travelers would discuss among themselves in German and decide what we were to do. They also had decided we needed to travel as fast as possible, without discussing it with us or our guide, so we felt very rushed throughout the trek. We felt that had we been placed in a group with a more diverse set of people, we wouldn't have felt so ostracized during the trek and could have discussed options together throughout our journey. All spoke English beautifully, so it really wasn't an issue of a language barrier. They were also extremely loud and disrespectful during our homestays and while walking, which wasn't the fault of Ever Smile, but made it less enjoyable as well since this went on for 3 days.
The trek itself was great, despite our rush to get to the next location, as we walked through multiple villages, watched the sunset from the mountains, and swam in a river. It ended in a boat ride to Nyaungshwe, included in the cost of the trek (40,000 kyat/person) unless you wanted to do a longer tour. The scenery was amazing and it was great to be able to see the Shan Hills, traditional village life, and as biologists, see the plants and animals of the region.
In the future, it would be nice if Ever Smile thought more about group dynamics before sending out people together for three days, especially since the route options and speed must be determined as a group. A smaller group may also have been nicer, as we did hear that other companies often only use groups of ~4 people, not 11-12.
Among the huge offer of places to do the trekking in kalaw I decided to choose Ever Smile because of the name (I love smiles :)). It has been the best decision ever! The trekking was amazing! No tourists on our way! The first day we went through forest (but sometimes you felt like in jungle) and breathtaking view points. The second day we walked through villages and mountain. The last day also villages and forest till the lake. The overall trekking was amazing! The food that the family houses offered was delicious!!!!!! SUPER DELICIOUS! Our guide OhOh was the nicest person ever! She speaks very good english and has a lot of knowledge about Myanmar and all the tribes so she explained everything during the trekking and could answer all our questions. The accomodations were good, foutons on the floor with enough blankets to sleep warm in the cold nights. The prince is unreal, 40.000 kyat for everything is an awesome deal!!!! And it also includes a boat trip through the lake!!!! I encourage everybody to do it, and with ever smile you will smile :)
Although the dry season is not the best moment to see kalaw, Jewel (our guide) made it sure that our trip was both interesting and funny. I'd never met a person with such a smile and so passionate for her job. Would do it again for sure!
We did a 3 day trek with eversmile to inle lake.
For 38000 kyat (though prices change depending on peak season) we got 3 days hiking, all meals, accomodation and a boat trip at the end up Inle lake.
The hike isn't technically challenging, generally pretty flat. You hike 22km the first day, 27 the second, and 16 the third day. The route goes through beautiful scenery and lots of local villages. You stay in local villages and the hosts get reimbursed for food and accommodation. Our guide was wonderful, very knowledgeable and considerate.
The treks with eversmile are cheaper than elsewhere but have more people in a group (we started with 13). We found this nice, but it might be an issue for some people.
The trek to Inle Lake from Kalaw with Ever Smile was fantastic. It was great having our extra bags driven to the final destination to lighten the load. We were always very well fed and the accommodations where we stayed felt authentic and intimate. We enjoyed the group we trekked with and have remained friends with some of them even after our travels.
We did a 3 day trek with Au and it was great fun! The group was a bit large but luckily we got along really well and enjoyed chatting to everyone.
I really enjoyed the food as well, there was plenty of food and choices and always catered to us vegans and the vegetarians.
I totally recommend this company for your trek to Inle Lake.
We did a 3 day trek with Mary as our guide and everything went perfect despite a little bit of rain along the path. Mary was an awesome guide and our group was super nice so we really bonded and enjoyed our 3 days together. Would 100% recommend and do it again if we come back to Myanmar
We did the 3 day trekk with Aung as a guide and it was really good! He taught us about everything we saw along the way from different crops to burmese culture. The only thing missing for a perfect experience is a better homestay where you actually meet the family who owns the house.
Excellent 3 day trek with personal service, great homestays and food, and awesome vibe. Great value too, probably because of plenty of business, 2 separate groups of 10 left our day.
Don't understand the comments about the food, for me it was the best part of the trek, it was very very plentiful, and tasty and varied, as much as you could eat!!! Yes the toilets are holes in the ground but you're in the country and the showers are ice cold buckets of water, but again you're in the middle of nowhere, it was let down by the amount of people trekking there's hundreds using the same route, and the "homestay" is a glorified dorm without a family member in sight, the guide was a charming man but severely lacking in knowledge about any of the flora and fauna, but very good on Buddhism, the people we trekked with gelled pleasantly and it makes for a good trek, it could so easily have been better with more information and interaction and a real homestay
I did a three day trekk to the Inle lake, and for that price, it's so worth it! All the food that was included and the homestays.
We had a really good guide, August. She guided us with no problem even though she was sick the first day, answered Qs and always inform us about whats coming and whats around us.
Thanks ever smile!
Horrible! Food was not sufficient and tasteless, bathrooms were holes in the ground, shower was ice cold buckets of dirty water, and the scenery was nothing to rant and rave about. After lunch the first day, it set the tone of what's to come. Literally for 12 people they put out 2 plates of each meal, guacamole, chips, oranges and grapes with a piece of bread for each person. Remember, you're walking 20-25 km a day! Our guide also never ate with us as he was having a feast in the kitchen while the 12 of us shared what little food was served. You also walk on a dirt road that is traveled by trucks and motorbikes. I wouldn't recommend this tour and I love the outdoors. Super dusty, horrible sleeping situation, sanitary conditions were bad, constantly hungry and it wasn't worth it. If you do it, make sure to have your hotel booked so they can drop off your bag. If not, they drop it off at some hotel that's 30 min walking from the Getty. We booked a place and told our guide to call and get our bags' location changed and he wouldn't do it. He had 2 days and then explained we can walk or hire a tuk tuk. I'd recommend this trek and tour company to my enemy!
We did an awesome trek with this company and guide "My". Don't let the super low prices put you off, yes the accommodation is very basic and the groups are around 12 people but everything else was spot on. Great food too! Such good value.
