Weherahena Pooorwaramaya Temple is 9.5 Km from the Southern Expressway exit via Matara town. The iconic sitting statue of Lord Buddha is 10m tall. Traditional stories from Buddhism are painted inside the statue. There's a large paid parking space near by.

This is an important place of worship amongst the buddhists around Sri Lanka. If visiting Matara should make a quick stop to admire the ancient arts and the maze like underground tunnels leading to the main Buddha statue which is one of the tallest sitting Buddha statues in the country.

Weherahena ( Veherahena) is popular temple among the buddhist pilgrims. Although there is nothing of historical significance, the story of the temple is quite interesting. In addition, the temple is said be the largest and the first tunnel temple in the world.

The Buddha statue is massive in size and you can walk inside of it. You can witness many beautiful drawings of Gautama Buddha and his stories. So when visiting please take your time to read them leisurely. Can easily proceed from Matara town.
