Let me start of by saying that the patients there are amazing and they deserve way more care then they are getting. The workers there hit, yell, and steal from the patients. When you inform the management they state that there is nothing like that going on there. I volunteered there for 3 weeks and I saw first hand as to what was happening. The workers would steal everything that they possible can from the patients, including food. Many of the patients can't feed themselves and so the workers feed them but do not feed them desert that is included in the food that is donated. Instead of feeding the patients that can't feed themselves the workers store away the deserts for themselves. I also donated new plates, cups, and bottles to all 146 patients out of the goodness of my heart on Christmas day. The next day, most of the bottles were stolen from the patients. The workers especially stole the bottles from the patients that aren't mentally aware. When we asked where the gifts were they lied and said that they stored it in the office but that is not true. The gifts shouldn't be stored in the office anyway because they were given for the patients to use not to be stored away. Even if those patients don't understand, they deserve the best care that they can get. I understand that workers there are doing a very difficult job but that does not give them the right to steal, yell, hit the patients. It's been a couple months since I wrote this review and I still stand by it. But I also want to say that this place is a great establishment that serves an amazing purpose for people that have nowhere else to go in a country that does not have the necessary requirements for a disabled person to be independent. But this establishment definitely lacks in the way that they treat their patients, the current workers mishandle the patients and if there was better care for the patients this establishment would be a resounding success. If I have the fortune of being able to volunteer in Sri Lanka again I would definitely choose to volunteer at the Victoria home because the patience are some of the best people I've ever met.

Victoria Home, a haven for Incurables

The Victoria Home for Incurables was established during the time when Sir Arthur Gorden was the Governor of Sri Lanka which was Ceylon at the time on March 13, 1888 in commemoration of the Coronation Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The Superintendent, D. K. Thewarapperuma says that the home was initially based near the Lipton Circus and that it had been known as the "Victoria Memorial Eye Hospital.’ "It was shifted to its present location at Rajagiriya in 1952.

The Victoria Home has a board of management which was established by Ordinance No. 7 of l903.Out of the 16 members of the Board of Management there are four who are ex-officio members who are the government agent of Colombo, the Department Secretary to the Treasury, the Director General Health Services (DGHS) and the Mayor of Colombo.

Thewarapperuma explained that the Home was meant for those who were physically handicapped at birth or accidents. They also should be between the ages of 18 and 55. Applications should be filled by parents or guardians under the recommendations of a government medical officer. It has to be sent to the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), for further recommendations. Applicants are only admitted after his recommendations.

Those who are mentally retarded, epileptic, mongrel, or able to walk are not admitted to this home. The Superintendant explained further that there was a very high demand for vacancies by those who are physically handicapped. Presently the waiting list is 102 persons long and they would probably have to wait for years to gain admittance, he said. At present 187 men and women are the inmates of the Victoria Home.

People with different abilities. Need our attention. If you can't support financially, just make sure you wave your hands and smile when you are passing the home in evening. Your little smile will make them happy.

This home was started when the house wad u donated by a lady. It's named in her honor. The home runs on funds received by the government and the generous donations of the people.

The home is shelter to many people who are disabled or incurable. This does not mean they lack the courage or compassion. Many people here are very creative and produces a lot of items. The ladies make items such as pillow covers and phone covers greeting cards and all sorts of things to keep themselves occupied. Those who have severe disabilities still make beautiful items for their pleasure. They do a lot. All they need is company and someone to just talk with. They do need medicines and special items as well which you can donate. Special items such as butter and jam sandwiches are a great treat.

The home needs renovations and thus needs a helping hand from those who can to maintain standards. It would be great if someone could help out. A hand is always welcome even of it is a small one.
The staff here needs more training in certain aspects. That said the staff here does a lot for a very low salary. The beds and the wards needs attention time to time. However these aren't always attended to immediately. This due to lack of funds.

Remember when donating it is best to keep an eye on things as management was known to misuse funds given to the home.

Any help in any way even companionship is very much valued here. Visiting this place makes you see that life is much much bigger than we think it is.
