The University of Peradeniya is the heir to a sixty year old University tradition which commenced with the inception of the University of Ceylon, the first institution of its kind established in Colombo on 1 July 1942. It moved to the banks of Mahaweli River, the longest in the Country, in 1952. However the history of its evolution as the oldest and the largest University in the country pass through the following stages.
1942 to 1952 University of Ceylon
1952 to 1972 University of Ceylon Peradeniya
1972 to 1978 Peradeniya Campus, University of Sri Lanka
Since 1978 University of Peradeniya
Sir Ivor Jennings the first Vice-Chancellor, on his first visit to the campus site in 1944 with the site plan of the architect Sir Patrick Abercrombie's, has written,
"No University in the world would have such a setting".
The University is located in Peradeniya in the Central Province, which bares lush greenery vegetation and mist-clad mountains, approximately 6 km from the City of Kandy, the historic Capital of the last independent Kingdom and 110 km from Colombo, Capital of Sri Lanka, and can be reached within two to three hours by public road or by railway.
The access to the University premises is through Galaha Road from the turn off near the historic Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, a popular tourist and lovers' attraction, famous for its rare tropical plants and orchids
The University covers about 700 hectares of land and the developed area covering approximately 130 hectares is occupied by buildings of the Faculties, Halls of Residence, Staff bungalows etc.
Throughout the campus most trees begin to bear flowers in early March signaling the coming of spring. Lovers' Lane, Kissing Bend, open-air theater and the lower Hantana Road display a rare aesthetic beauty through the rich foliage.response / report this review -

Heavenly lands of University of Peradeniya that sets among rolling mountains and green woodlands that spans nearly about 700 hectares in the Mahavali basin bears breathtaking surroundings that doesn't stand second to it's outstanding academic credentials. The most anticipated season of the year is arrives every April when the flowers bloom perfuming the air with their heavenly scent spreading the message of love and harmony.The lush yellow color under the blue sky is stunning and does not fail to make memories that last for a lifetime. The heavenly aromas and this breathtaking sceneries is an evocative of summers past and a teleporter to the memories that we cherish despite the age and all the differences.

Best university in Sri Lanka with a large amount of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Great learning environment with highly qualified academic staff in well equipped classes and laboratories. Beautiful environment located amongst the foothills of Hantane mountain range.

One of the most beautiful university in the world and has a unique and proud history. Has a lovely architectural masterpieces around the uni and all the things designed by very famous architecture Jefry Bawa in 1950s. Produced tons of excellent personalities already and every years passing out many of talented graduates.

I am absolutely grateful to be the recipient of the tremendous amount of serenity life of the University of Peradeniya, who put together this establishment. I too have witnessed the splendor of Sri Lanka at "The Garden University". I am loving to make the most of my time at the University of Peradeniya. However, I have never visited such a beautiful University as The University of Peradeniya. It is a privilege indeed to be an undergraduate student at the Faculty of Science , University of Peradeniya.

It's a garden, no it is a paradise. A paradise with a great history. Each structure here gives a great historical feeling to me. It's not just a university. Absolutely one of the major dreams of Sri Lankan students to be here. gardens full of flowers, eye caching architectural designs, nice shaped landscaping, loving environment , mild climate are unique features of this paradise. Hanthana mountain range stands aside pretending to be the guard of the paradise. Queen Mahaveli flows through this paradise leaving only memories. Every second living in mother pera is heart touching.
