The Thanthirimale Rajamaha Viharaya  is now surrounded by huge boulders and thick forest covers. One could only imagine what the monastery had looked like nearly 2300 years ago but the peace and serenity still prevails.
Built in the Third Century BC and used by King Devanampiyatissa as a one-day stop to Arahanth Theri Sangamitta on her way to Anuradhapura, Thanthirimale Rajamaha Viharaya seems to have developed from a small temple to a large monastery by the end of the Anuradhapura period.

One of the oldest buddhist moanstaries in the country dating back to King Devanampiyatissa (307-267 BC). Thanthirimale itself is one of the oldest human settlements in Sri Lanka. Prehistoric cave arts had been discovered in the Thanthirimale region. Thanthirimale is the site for one of the original eight bodhi tree saplings from the Sacred Bodhi tree at Anuradhapura.

A place with a great scenic beauty. Quiet and calm when you move a bit further away from the temple areas on the rocky terrain.
The hike to see the pre historic scribbles is interesting and runs through a mild dry area jungle. The water ponds and uniform landscapes around are quite comforting for a sight seeing walk.

One of the oldest buddist temples in Sri Lanka and may have a history beyond the buddist era.

Beautiful and ancient buddhist temple situated in a rock covered area at Thanthirimale, have ancient cave arts, and ruins of ancient Buddhist temple, there are ponds within the rocks and need to go far side of the temple for the cave arts. This place was unidentified till the beginning of the 19th century, and in the 1960s the temple was reestablished by Buddhist monks. The temple and surrounding area are full of ruins, including two stone statues and several stone ponds. There is an archaeological museum at Thanthirimale.

If you visit Anuradhapura you must go for this temple although It is located approximately 40 km north west of the Anuradhapura city its worth the visit.

You must visit this temple if you are heading to Anuradhapura this way. The temple which was built in third century BC has a great historical value.
Don't forget to walk down the tracks to see the caves and the pre-historic paintings.

If you plan to go to the temple and explore the surrounding area and also see the prehistoric drawings, be prepared to spend several hours at Thanthirimale. It would be best to visit this place early in the morning before the sun gets too hot.
