An ancient Budhist sthupa worshipped by locals. Roads need to be improved but difficult due to running through wildlife areas. Lots of wild animals on the road to Situlpawwa from Kataragama. Buddhists must visit this place. Don't be scared of animals around the temple premises.

It's a unique place which everyone should visit. Road to situlpauwa also a really different experience where u can see lot of wild animals arround the roal like wild bows, peocoke, elephants etc

This is an ancient Buddhist temple. It is believed that 1000's of Buddhists monks were here during a difficult time period in the past. Big area with a small mountain. Ride to the temple is a long drive inside Yala Jungle.

Sithulpawwa Rajamaha Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist monastery located in Hambantota District, South Eastern Sri Lanka. Situated 18 km east of the pilgrimage town Katharagama, it is believed to have been built in the 2nd century B.C by king Kavantissa. Sithulpawwa Vihara can be reached by travelling 18 miles along the Tissamaharama-Yodhakandiya road towards the Yala National Park. The name Sithulpawwa is derived from the word "Chiththala Pabbatha", which means the hill of the quiet mind.

It was around 17 km from Kataragama town. The road was via Yala sanctuary and the road was very dusty, but not that bad. If carefully driven, can go with any vehicle. There also were animals in the sanctuary by the road. Has a large parking area. At noon, it is very hot there. You can climb the rock to its top. This is a historic place. The view was fascinating from the top. The elephants from the sanctuary come here for bathing and eating. Basic washroom facilities and food courts are available.

Specially in rainy days, it is harder to travel to Sithulpawwa from Katharagama side due to road condition. But nice forest area with wild animals such as Deer, Elephant, Rabbit, Peacock, etc.

There is another small cliff next to the main cliff. It's a nice walk.
Don't go to Situlpawwa late in the afternoon as animals start to come to the road as night falls & you can't walk around the place as there is no lights around.
