Lying, money grabbing & thuggee..
My client was supposed to trek Sinharaja Forest on 1st Feb 2017.
Since that was going to be the first time I do this Sinharaja trekking, I got a quotation of a trekking package over the phone, expecting a guidance from the owner of Birder’s Lodge (Mr. Janaka). A month before, he said price is 25 USD and it includes lunch + tea + trekker & doesn’t include entrance tickets. The day before the trip I called him to confirm. In that call he said 25 USD doesn’t include the trekker, because I get a trekker from entrance of the forest. I accepted the offer.
When I reached the Birder’s Lodge, I got to know, the owner doesn’t live at the area and he lives close to Colombo. But his brother was there. When I was going to pay, he said 25 USD includes entrance tickets + lunch + trekker + water. That moment I understood Mr. Janaka has lied me from the beginning.
Mr. Janaka’s brother said sandwiches can be brought inside of the forest as lunch. And promised me to make one more sandwich for me too.
Since I have already paid for tickets and entrance, I was going to pay the rest (2300 LKR). But he didn’t have change money. I paid him 2500 instead.
After 20 minutes when the lunch was ready, he said that, he got a call from his brother & 25 USD doesn’t include trekker or tickets. I asked him, “why should I pay 25 USD (3900 LKR) for 2 sandwiches”? He said “25 USD includes another trekker”. But I had only 1 client. Buying 2 trekkers for 1 guest, makes no sense. Therefore I refused.
He took 2500 LKR (16USD) for 2 sandwiches and handed over only 4 bottles of water and juices. He took back sandwiches with him. And turned wildlife department's cashier against me and forced me to leave my belongings at the entrance. It's may be a department's rule. And he even tried to stop me going inside the forest even though I had bought tickets.
After all I went inside, leaving my bag in the car. But I saw everyone except me had a bag with them. Then I and my client had to trek inside the forest until 4pm without food and enough water. This was the worst day I spent in touring.
