Its a tough deal to talk around in this area when the Sun is on the top. Otherwise it would be nice to walk around here in morning or evening. Nice scenarios, calm place.

Believed constructed by King Nishshankamalla of Polonnaruwa. According to the Stone seat inscription located in front of the main entrance of the Stupa, this place also known as Ruwanweliseya of Polonnaruwa.

Rankoth ( Rankot) Vehera (Goldern Pinnacle) Stupa, is the 4th largest stupa in the country after Ruwanveli Seya, Jetawanarama and Abhayagiriya in Anuradhapura. Built by King Nissanka Malla (1187-1196), it is 55 meters in height 185 meters in circumference. This is the largest Stupa in Polonnaruwa.

Initial name of this has been “Ruwanmali dagaba” and this is a probably an attempt to build a similar Stupa to the Ruwanveli Seya of Anuradhapura. A rock inscription east to the Stupa describes how the King Nissanka Malla (1187-1196) supervised to the work of this temple sitting at that place.

The guard stones at the menik vehera is also unique. Generally on the side of the guard stone you can find a carving of a bull. But on the guard stones at the entrance of the Menik vehera this bull has been replaced by an elephant.

A impressively huge building that I regard as 1 of the highlights of the whole complex. 1 warning I would give is is you can't footwear when going up so I really suggest bringing socks. I didn't and it was sunny out so my feet burned. I literally ran and hopped around the place. I get it's sacred for believers but they can really do something about that as it's a problem. Not withstanding that it is still worth walking around.

Rankoth Vehera is structure made entirely of brick, and has a base diameter of 550 feet (170 m) and a height of 108 feet (33 m). However, the original shape of the stupa, particularly its upper portion, has been changed during renovation work carried out by later rulers and it is estimated that the original height of Rankoth Vehera may have been almost 200 feet (61 m).Despite this, it remains the largest stupa in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, and the fourth largest stupa in the country. The stupa has four large Vahalkadas, a structure used for offering flowers and also to support the weight of a stupa. These are also made of brick. The stupa is located in the center of a large square terrace, which is also surrounded by a brick wall. The terrace has four entrances oriented to the four cardinal points, with sand paths leading to them.A stone inscription near one of the entrances mention that King Nissanka Malla observed and supervised the construction of the stupa from there. It is also mentioned that he worshiped the stupa from a small platform, which is located in a corner of the terrace.

Great history of Sri Lanka.Rankoth Vehera is a stupa located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka. The stupa was built by Nissanka Malla of Polonnaruwa, who ruled the country from 1187 to 1196.[1] The Rankoth Vehera has been built according to the tradition of the stupas of the Anuradhapura Maha Viharaya and bears a close resemblance to Ruwanwelisaya.[2] In fact, a stone inscription situated close to the stupa even identifies it by the name "Ruwanweli". However, it has later come to be known by the currently used name, Rankoth Vehera.[3] In Sinhalese, ran means gold, kotha is the name given to the pinnacle of a stupa, and vehera means stupa or temple. Thus, the name Rankoth Vehera can be roughly translated to English as "Gold Pinnacled Stupa".[4] Along with the Kiri Vehera, it is one of the most revered stupas in Polonnaruwa.[2]

One of the structures inside of site, which is hard to miss, as it is very close to main road and also height of the stupa is 33 metres. But other interesting place, which is neglected and missed by most of tourists, is very interesting rock north of the stupa and east of ancient hospital. It is marked also in google maps as Gopala Pabbatha and as number 17 in the map of the site. Web says, that it was the oldest site of the area and used to be a cave monastery in 2nd century BC, although this sounds strange, as there is no real cave, just the hole in the rock. But the rock was obviously used to take a building material for later building of the structures (many holes in the rocks around from special wood used to break the rock), so maybe it used to be much bigger. You can climb up to the top of the rock and get nice view of the site. Very nice tree is growing right on the top. Unfortunately the view of the Rankoth Vihara is mostly blocked by the trees. I am currently trying to edit the place with Google, so I can add photos directly to the place.

Brick was the only construction material used in the entire stupa. Rankoth Vehera’s circular base has a diameter of approximately 170m (550 feet) and a height of approximately 33m (108 feet) at the tip of the stupa. However, renovation was carried out on the upper portion of Rankoth Vehera by later rulers changing the height of the structure. Research has shown that the original height of the stupa may have been as great as 200 feet (61m). Even after the drastic decrease Rankoth Vehera remains the largest stupa in Polonnaruwa, and the fourth largest in the country. Rankoth Vehera has four Vahalkadas supporting the weight of the stupa, which are also made of brick. The entire stupa lies in the center of a large square terrace that is surrounded by a brick wall. The terrace has four entrances in the directions of the four cardinal points, with sand paths leading up to them. It is inscribed on a stone close to one of the entrance that King Nissanka Malla watched over and supervised the construction of the stupa. The inscription also mentions that he worshiped the stupa from a stone platform. This platform can be found at a corner of the terrace on which the stupa is placed.

Ancient stupa built under the rule of King Nissankamalla (1187-1196 AD). Bears a close resemblance to Ruwanwelisaya stupa of Anuradhapura.
