Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) (translit. Mattala Rājapakṣa Jātyantara Guvantoṭupaḷa; Tamil: மத்தல ராஜபக்ச பன்னாட்டு வானூர்தி நிலையம், translit. Mattala Rājapakca Paṉṉāṭṭu Vāṉūrti Nilaiyam) (IATA: HRI, ICAO: VCRI) is an international airport serving southeast Sri Lanka. It is located in the town of Mattala, 18 km (11 mi) from Hambantota. It is the first greenfield airport and the second international airport in the country, after Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo.
Mahinda Rajapaksa, who ordered the construction of the airport. Initially, several airlines flew to the airport, including SriLankan Airlines which established a hub. However, due to low demand, most of these airlines left Mattala. As of June 2017, two airlines fly from the airport to destinations within Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.response / report this review -

Hope this will turn to one of a best Airport in future. It can handle large Passenger Air crafts as A380 & AN225 Cargo flight.

Lots of comfy seats available in the air conditioned departure lounge, however waiting room music is slightly annoying after an hour or so (hence the 4 stars).
Small shop selling Sri Lankan tourist memorabilia, small restaurant area with a selection of food options and canned/bottled soft drinks available.
No visible foreign exchange place (after passport control) to change your Sri Lankan rupees back to dollar, no choice but to spend it in the shops (good job we didn’t have much).
Staff are thorough and efficient.
Relatively easy to get to from kirinda / yala area.
At the time we used the airport it seems there is only one airline flying in/out every other day.response / report this review -

The airport is really nice but I think Sri Lanka has failed this project with only one airline operating their (flyDubai) and its flag Carrier SriLankan ending hub operations and routes from Mattala.Colombo airport is going to have a upgrade and who knows the future of Hambantota?

Best planned with good facilities and must needed airport for development of Sri Lanka. Going to be well connected with Colombo and rest of the Sri Lanka with the Southern expressway very soon. Government must develop the area to support increased tourists arrivals..

Good airport with well planned and good infrastructure facilities. And also new technology. Must operate & develop this airport to develop the country and that area. But now as it is inoperative they didn't maintained it well.

Beautiful airport. But what a stange place. I was one of the only 10 passangers in the building. Couldn’t make a move without staff asking me to sit down and what I wanted to have.

This is a well planned and newly consyructed modern airport. But still this is not much operational. But it seems that this would be a one of most beutiful and buziest airport in the south asia in future.

This is wasteful of srilanka government project i apologize but if i say srilankan government is stupid i recommend this srilanka government should cooperate with the relevant authorities if the project is carried out ar great expense by the government of srilanka again srilanka public is very pity because their money has run out i think president rajapaksa should be held accountable session and brought to justice by the public or the constitution of srilanka

A beautiful nature / wildlife area converted into an Airport. Well equipped Airport, tastefully done. More a local Tourist attraction, with hardly any flights.

The first stage of the airport has now been completed to serve one million passengers per year; it will also handle 45,000 Mt of air cargo. A total of 2,000 hectares has been reserved for the project out of which 800 hectares have been used for the stage one.

Second International Airport of sri lanka. Can do operations for 5 flights per hour. 3 aero bridgers. Can land large air craft (A380 also)
