The Maligawila Buddha statue is a standing statue of the Buddha in Sri Lanka and has been carved out of a large limestone rock during the 7th century by a prince named Agrabodhi. It is the tallest free-standing ancient statue of the Buddha found in the country. It was broken into a number of pieces by the time it was found in 1951. The Maligawila Buddha statue is located close to the village of Maligawila in the Moneragala District of the Uva Province in Sri Lanka.
It has been carved from a single large limestone rock, and is considered to be the tallest ancient free-standing image in Sri Lanka, with a height of 37 feet and 10 inches. Along with the Buddha statues of Avukana and Buduruwagala, the Maligawila Buddha statue is considered one of the best examples of the standing image of the Buddha of ancient Sri Lanka. It bears a close resemblance to the Avukana statue, and depicts the same Asisa Mudra, a variation of the Abhaya Mudra depicting that The Buddha clutches the robe at the left shoulder, while the right hand is raised to the right shoulder.

Maligawila Buddha statue is a popular attraction for both local and foreign tourists.
however the monastery complex where its situated is not explored by many as there is no enough publicity . The complex which is dating back to 667 AD built by the King Aggabodhi.
The complex is said to be 400 acres of land. entire extend is not excavated and large part is jungle. you will feel that you are jungle trekking.
Ruins of monastery is also looks neglected and seems to be not properly excavated in comparison to Buddha statue and Bodhisathva statue. However it will be very interesting for you if you are a history and archi buff.
Ancient place in Sri Lanka
Tallest(37-10”) free standing ancient Buddha statue found in the country. Thought to be done by a prince called Aggabodhi from Ruhunu Kingdom in the 7th century.

Maligawila is remote village in the Moneragala District which lies about 15 kilometers off the Buttala town towards Okkampitiya. In 1951, a massive Buddha Statue broken in to pieces was discovered in the Jungles of Maligawila. The statue was further damaged by treasure hunters.
An attempt was made in 1974 to raise this statue and failed. But in 1980, then President Ranasinge Premadasa assigned a local engineering team who was was able to raise this statue and restore it back to the ancient glory.

Parling facilities availabke at thevtemple premises and there you can buy flowers,ornaments, and fruits from villegers.
Do not buy sweets from there becouse locals buy them from wholesale oulets and repack them therefore the quality and the expiry dates are not trustfull and accurate.
