Degaldoruwa Raja Maha Viharaya is one of historical temples around Kandy. The main attraction is the frescos in the stone ceiling in the cave shrine. It's very Authentic Kandian era frescos. One major fresco is the Defeat of Mara by Lord Buddha. (මාර පරාජය). Due to the Portuguese influence, sinhalese artists knew about the guns. So among the yaksha who comes to war with Lord Buddha have also guns as well as the Spears, bows as the weapons. This is one specific point. Don't forget to watch this carefully. You can reach this within 30 minutes from Kandy. There is nothing much to watch except for this. But historic place indeed.

Degaldoruwa Raja Maha Vihara (Sinhalese: දෙගල්දෝරුව රජමහා විහාරය) is an ancient Buddhist rock temple, situated in Amunugama, Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is famous for its Kandyan Era Frescoes. The cave itself was said to have been excavated out of a rock which rises to a height of approximately 12.3 m (40 ft),and shelters the shrine room and entrance chamber.

Details relating to the construction of the temple and the royal land grant are contained on the Degaldoruwa Tamba Sannasa (Copper Plate).Construction of the temple was commenced in 1771 during the reign of King Kirti Sri Rajasinha [1747-1782 AD] by his younger brother, Rajadhi Rajasinha and completed by Rajadhi Rajasinha after he ascended to the throne. Following the temples completion Rajadhi Rajasinghe placed the Temple in the custody of a learned monk, Moratota Dhammakkanda Maha Nayaka Thera [1734-1811], who was also Rajadhi Rajasingha's teacher and chief advisor.

We found this Temple and after reading some of its history we decided to check it out. This place really took us by surprise. It's small but really extravagant in it's paintings and details. We donated some money as it is free and the monk, who spoke good English, gave us some of the history of the Temple and explained to us the paintings on the wall and roof. It's not touristy which is wonderful and it's easy to get to by tuk tuk. We just asked our driver to wait and take us back and he did. For something a little quieter but still amazing, this is a great spot. Happy we came.

Super cool and off the beaten path. Easy to get to with a tuk tuk, and really beautiful statues and wall paintings. A fun walk back through little villages with friendly people.

Arts and the structural engineering is amazing though it's an old temple. It's possible to see Kandian painting in the caves. There are couple of friendly dogs who is in the temple. Don't forget to give them a biscuit if you are visiting this place. If the caves are closed, you can ask the monks to open them up and they will give you a really good description about the paintings as well.

Degaldoruwa Viharaya is set up on terrace of a low rocky outcrop into another rock mass rising to a height of 40 feet. Alongside the temple is an impressive belfry. The main chamber is created by creating a large cavity under a large granite rock A path carved of rock leads to a higher terrace where the Bo tree and the stupa is located. Degaldoruwa Viharaya is located at the village of Amunugama, 7km from Kandy.

A small beautiful ancient temple .calm and peaceful atmosphere if you go there in the very early morning or at the evening. The upper plateau has a great view over the whole area and you can sit and meditate there whole day.
