The Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and perhaps one of the largest cave monasteries in the island country of Sri Lanka. It is located 148 km east of Colombo and 72 km north of Kandy. The Dambulla Temple has been a sacred pilgrimage site for the last 22 centuries. The cave temple complex is very well preserved, spanning over an area of roughly 2100 square meters.

Another ancient place. Parking space is also there. You have to walk the steps to the top. There are two ways to enter. Full of monkeys and to be careful when trying to feed them.
There is a beautiful view at the top of the rock.

Take the short stairs from the other side, because the other side is quite the climb especially in the heat. You need to take of your shoes (there people to watch it for you for 25 rs ) and you need to have your knees covered , so don't forget to bring something if needed. It's not a very big site, but the caves are quite impressive with lots of statues of different sizes. The painting of the walls and ceiling are simply stunning. Although expected a real tourist place, so expect groups and lots of people waiting to take a picture of the same thing.

Very cool, very well preserved. Currently 1500rs for foreigners to get in (mar 2018).

If coming from the golden Buddha (cheaper but strenuous), left of the Buddha you’ll see a path going up. Keep going to the top and you’ll see the cave entrance (~25min). You can’t buy tickets here if you’re foreign. You must continue down the mountain in the same direction to the ticket office. Bags can be left here. After you get your ticket (no ID at all required, one person can buy them for the group waiting at the entrance), walk back up to the entrance.

If starting in Dambulla, I would highly recommend you ask a rickshaw in dambulla to take you to the ticket office if it’s hot (~300rs). Buy your ticket and from there there you can just walk 10min steeply up to the entrance. Walking down via the golden Buddha is nice.

Shoes must be removed (you can do it beside the entrance for no fee or pay some man 25rs to look after your shoes), shoulders and knees need to be covered. Shorts are fine as long as they’re relatively long. A few really cool caves inside.

The bus stops near the golden Buddha have cheap service to Kandy.

Very beautiful and amazing place to visit. There is a pot that always filled with water that come through the rock. In the cave there are beautiful wall arts. Those are painted by very skilled old artists. Great place to visit

Good Day in The Golden Temple
We had a good day in the temple. From the heights of a beautiful view of the forest cover. I recommend not to climb the mountain in shorts, and then forced to cuddle towel, as the entrance to the temple is forbidden to open legs to the knee.

A world heritage site, dating back to 1 century BCE. 5 caves with beautiful age old paintings. Generally peaceful, avoid holidays (Too crowded). Should follow traditional attire to enter the caves.

Very beautifull temple, carved into the rocks, a must see.
Very well preserved.
You can buy some flowers to offer at the temple, but be aware, the monkey love the white ones, and will try to take them, buy the blue ones.
Don't forget to take something to drink with you, the caves can be hot, and even if the visit won't be that long you will get thirsty and you can't buy a drink at the temple.

Beautiful temple complex situated in 5 caves. Much better and more impressive than expected. Every cave temple is different but they are all beautifully decorated with wall paintings and statues. We went late afternoon and it was very quite. If you do not want to walk all the steps turn back a few hundred meters towards the road and take the side entrance.

Dambulla cave temple (Sinhalese: Dam̆būlū Len Vihāraya, Tamil Tampuḷḷai Poṟkōvil) also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla is a World Heritage Site (1991) in Sri Lanka, situated in the central part of the country. This site is situated 148 kilometres (92 mi) east of Colombo and 72 kilometres (45 mi) north of Kandy. It is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock towers 160 m over the surrounding plains.There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Gautama Buddha and his life. There are a total of 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings and four statues of gods and goddesses. The latter include Vishnu and the Ganesha. The murals cover an area of 2,100 square metres (23,000 sq ft). Depictions on the walls of the caves include the temptation by the demon Mara, and Buddha's first sermon.

Prehistoric Sri Lankans would have lived in these cave complexes before the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka as there are burial sites with human skeletons about 2700 years old in this area, at Ibbankatuwa near the Dambulla cave complexes.

Besides being on top of a rock, this wonderful place has gone through ages without a blemish and the paintings are original and NOT restored since they were imprinted on the walls. The quietness and somber feeling of this caves, go along the magnificent sensation of elation and humbleness you get from the place.

Just be aware of the mischievous monkeys while climbing up.

The golden Buddha is impressive from a far, but near close you can't gasp (or photo) it. Also the imperfections, like huge wasp hives, are seen when you get close.

To reach the cave temple you need to climb a significant number if stairs. The temple is impressive comparing to other Buddhist temples.

Foreigner tickets costs 1500lkr, but it is easy to miss the tickets booth and no one is checking the tickets on top.

'storing' you shoes will cost you 25lkr.

Overall I recommend visiting it if you haven't had your share of Buddhism attractions yet.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE!
Entrance fee: LKR 1500

It's beautiful early in the morning. Highly recommended. We had the place to our-self. There was only a few local around. We sit at the outside the temple for a bit. Nice view, felt at peace and the best part, we were blessed with rainbow.

Tips: Get your driver to drive up to another gate at the side. The local driver knows all about the short cut. So you can skip the stairs infront if you are short in time.
