Gorgeous, isolated, well catered for, quiet relaxed guest house. Felt like being in a Ms Marple novel.

We travelled on a 'secret' road from Strathisla Guest House to the Ashburnham Estate, through beautiful scenic tea-plantation hill country, to be greeted warmly by dashing manager Max, at this breath-takingly sited boutique hotel, which dates from the Edwardian era. The terrace views are tremendous, with ancient Tulip Trees 70 feet high framing panoramas of mountains and valleys. The special Gin-and-tonics served here are possibly the best in the Province! The 100 acres of grounds are beautifully kept, with hidden natural wonders to explore; including a private natural waterfall. The friendly staff serve delicious food, and most rooms have 4-poster beds and/or private patiosMosaic bathrooms are an unexpected luxurious delight. My friends from Mount Lavinia loved it, and extended their stay, as it was so difficult to leave this lovely place the peace and beauty here being so addictiveHighly recommended.

If you are happiest surrounded by greenery, mountains, being off the beaten track, calm, tranquility, cooler nights, accommodation that oozes effortless style whilst making you feel completely at home then I encourage you to stay at Ashburnham. Arriving from the busy streets of Danbulla at Ashburnahm was heaven really. The evening we arrived Gonnie asked how I was feeling and I told her, "I am just so content, this place makes you feel incredibly calm and relaxed". I meant every word. The owners, who we had the pleasure of meeting and having dinner with one evening, have really respected the plantations history and it's been beautifully renovated. It's not pretentious or trying to be something it's not. Ash feels very much a home away from home. The food is excellent, the rooms are large and clean. Being at least a 20 minute tuktuk ride from anywhere means there's lots to do on site. We did an excellent cookery class with Reggie ($20pp and only three of us there!), we walked for hours and hours through the stunning scenery. We visited the completely private, secluded waterfall which was huge and beautiful. Only a 10 minute walk from the house, we were able to swim underneath it and bathe on the rocks nearby.

We've been on our honeymoon, staying in the Maldives and countless lovely hotels in Sri Lanka but I can honestly say I felt the most relaxed at Ashburnham.

Thank you Gonnie, Pieter, Reggie, Vish, David, Indie and the rest of the Ash team. We will be back again I'm sure.

This 1930s bungalow is sprawled across 98 acres of a tea plantation, at the foot of the Knuckles Mountain Range. Enjoying stunning scenery in the Sri Lankan countryside, Ashburnham Estate offers Sri Lankan cooking classes, a guided tea estate tour and an on-site 40-foot waterfall.

Well-decorated and spacious, all guestrooms and suites come with an en suite bathroom. Some rooms have a private terrace, or direct access to the gardens.

Ashburnham Estate is 2 km from Elkaduwa Bus Terminal, 14 km from Wattegama Railway Station and 22 km from Polgolla Reservoir Airport in Kandy. It is 25 km from the Temple of the Tooth and 32 km from the Royal Botanical Gardens. The Dambulla Cave Temples are 54 km away.

Free Wi-Fi is available in public areas. For recreation, guests can also make use of the outdoor pool or the tennis courts. Free parking is also available.

The on-site restaurant serves both Sri Lankan and Western dishes.

The Ashburnham Estate is a fantastic peaceful paradise away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Everything was excellent – ambiance, great rooms, magnificent service and unbelievable food. The working tea plantation is exciting to explore as you watch the harvesting of the leaves, the weighing of each bundle and the loading of the tea bags to be processed. There are many trails to explore as well a wonderful waterfall on the plantation. The owner, Dave, took us on walk through the plantation as well as a visit to a tea mill where we had the opportunity to see the entire process as to how tea is made, from leaf to finished product. We will not forget this memorable stay. Thank you.
