We were travelling to Sri Lanka in a group of four. I had organised our Yala Park jeep safari prior to our arrival via e-mail. So we arrived at the office just at the agreed time of 2 p.m. Everything was fine. We paid the agreed amount and hopped on the jeep in front of the office. On our drive to the park entrance we were overtaking a few jeeps of other companies. When we finally arrived at the entrance there were a lot of jeeps from different companies with guest on board waiting. Those we had overtaken also arrived. Our driver left us in the vehicle and went off - supposedly to fix the entrance permission. During the time we were waiting many of the other jeeps left from the area where we were waiting. After 15-20 minutes our driver came back and we continued through the gate into the National Park. The first thing we had to realise was that there were 50-100 jeeps at the same time on their way around the park on the dirt roads. Sometimes we were racing other jeeps or overtaking them. I cannot complain that we did not see animals but I ave to say that the experience was rather disappointing since there was barely 5 minutes when we were not surrounded by other jeeps. This of course has nothing to do with the safari company itself. The National Park Authorities do not regulate and restrict the number of vehicles effectively. We saw one single company that alone had 20-30 vehicles at the same time in the park.
The time passed soon and we had to leave the park by 6 p.m. It was dark when we reached the headquarters of the safari company where our private minibus was waiting for us.
The jeep stoped on the side of the road and all climbed down from the seats on the back of the vehicle. The driver jumped onto the back of the car and asked if we took everything. We thought we took all our belongings so we answered yes. We also gave him som tips. Than we said goodbye and we left with our minibus to a nearby local restaurant. After a few minutes the driver surprisingly showed up at the restaurant and asked where we were heading. Our next accommodation was in Galle so we told him. He said goodbye and left.
When we arrived at the accommodation I realised that I had left my 200 USD tripod on the floor next to the seat on the jeep. Because it was late I did not want to call the company immediately so we called them next morning. The owner told me that he will look for the tripod and call back. To my biggest surprise he called back and told me that there was nothing on the jeep. I mentioned that the driver came to the restaurant and that he had asked us about our destination. So after 5 minutes the driver called us in a rather impolite tone, saying that we told him “we had everything” why would we complain now.I tried to tell him that we believed we had everything but this was not the case. He insisted that we had no right to complain, a.k.a. “No complains after leaving the counter”.Later the owner of the company sent me some cctv footage trying to prove that we had the tripod when we entered our bus but it turned out that it was the gimbal my friend Kornel was holding. In our final telephone conversation the owner told me he will be looking into more cctv footage from neighbouring shops to check wether the driver had taken anything from the jeep after we left. I have not heard from him since so I assume that I have to consider my new tripod as “lost”.

I am traveling a lot and I have been to many parts of the world. I do my best no to forget anything anywhere but from time-to-time it happens. This is one of the few occasions if left something of considerable value that I did not get back. I consulted my travel buddies and we are commonly sure that the tripod remained on the jeep when we left. What happened to it after that is unknown.

I cannot tell you if the service of other safari companies is better but please take extra care about your belongings if you decide to choose this particular company for your Yala Safari.

We had an excellent tour in Yala and Bundala national parks. The driver is knowledgeable and had hawk eyes to find animals. Definetely recommend this tour operator.

I had a good time thanks to the excellent Guide/ Driver

I will use them again and now I have learned a few things that will make it more pleasant. Skip their food, yeah, they call it pick-nick. Have your hotel to arrange this for you, will be better and cheaper.

Someone made a remark about the lunch box here. Yes, I had what most have been the driest chicken I have ever had.

The breakfast was not any better. And the price I pad for this, robbery.

But I stayed at Laya Safari Hotel and they made brake fast boxes for me, for free and hundred times better. So if you take full day safaris ask the hotel to arrange your food.

The jeeps were actually pick-up trucks with seats in the back so it was impossible to speak with the driver. Very important and what I'm used to from Africa and India.

So next time I will require a jeep with access to the driver/ Guide

Otherwise it was good service and I had a very good time during the 9 days I used them.

The leopard barely can see by distance , most of animals that you can see are elephants and cows.
    The lunch box was horrible
