A thing of beauty is a joy forever!!
We visited this huge statue, situated at Moneragala temple in Rambodagalla, early morning at sunrise on 4th January 2018. The statue had been carved from an existing rock. It is simply beautiful !! The surroundings were serene, calm and quiet. There was an offering to the Buddha statue, complete with beating drums, while we were there. There were very few people that early in the morning. The statue faces east and we saw golden rays of the morning sun making it glow.
The seated statue is 20.57 metres in height and is in “Samadhi” (meditating) position. It is claimed to be the largest seated Buddha statue in the world. The work on this had begun in 2002. Although most of the statue is complete there are some areas that the artiste is not completely happy about. These areas under the armpit is covered with a yellow cloth. The chief sculptor was Mr. Muthia Sthapathy, a world renowned Indian sculptor. In front of the statue is a pond with clear water. The wall surrounding the pond had been completed with lotus leaves as if the Buddha is sitting on a pond with lotus leaves!
The leading priest at the Rambodagalla temple conceived the idea of this beautiful statue when he heard of the destruction of Bamian Buddha statues in Afghanistan by Taliban rebels.
There is no fee to visit this location. From the car park visitors walk up on a gentle slope for about 250 metres to the statue. Opposite the statue is the Moneragala temple. Visitors may donate towards the maintenance of the temple and night-time lighting of the statue.
We felt calm and composed after being at the statue for over 90 minutes. It was a morning well spent!response / report this review -

This Samadhi Buddha statue located at the Rambadagalla Monaragala Viharaya in Ridigama, Kurunegala is 67.5 feet in height. The statue is considered as world's largest statue of Samadhi Buddha. The works for this carved Buddha statue was started in 2003 September. Ven. Egodamulla Amaramoli Threro, the chief incumbent of Vidyasagara Priven Vihara, Rambodagalla, Rideegama is the main person behind the great statue crafting which happened nearly after 800 years of such a statue in made at Polonnaruwa.

A great monument carved in stone, located in Monaragala Temple (called as Rambadagalla Viharaya). What is so important is it's not just a cement sculpture, but carved into a big granite stone.
However this place is so crowded during holidays. Visit the statue when there is less crowd, you will feel the real tranquility of looking at Samadhi state of Buddha.
Surrounding floor area is stone layered. Feel hot to the feet at noon time. So best time to visit is early morning or late evening.response / report this review -

Must see place in Sri Lanka! Great and honorable effort of the Buddhists in Sri Lanka. Thanks to all who were involved to create this beautiful granite statue of load Buddha
