Nice resort with fresh air every day

My wife and i stayed at this incredible resort for part of our honeymoon in November of 2017and we have nothing but amazing things to say about it! The owner is just wonderful, knwoeldgeable about Laos, the local area, and full of great travel tips and ideas. But, you dont need to venture out of the grounds of this resort (although you must visit Luang Prabang city center several times as its only a 30 minute drive) because the sheer beauty if this SE Asian country is on full display. The sounds of the jungle at night, the views from our balcony of the rolling lush mountainsides and the distant sounds of the elephants makes this place truly magnificent. The food, all locally made/sourced is fantastic, the service very good, the grounds stunning. I highly recommend this peaceful resort to anyone looking to escape and relax.

This could've been paradise on earth.
Location is fantastically remote. The room we were occupying had an amazing view of the nam khan river from the east side. Unfortunately, that's about it when it comes to the positive sides.
The quality of the room was poor. It was severely under-maintained. Web cobs everywhere, gecko / rat / mice droppings everywhere. I do understand it's in the middle of the jungle and all, but the room was in such condition when we got there. Everything smelled of mold and the bedsheets were not really clean. The pillows were made of whatever sponge material and I woke up with a neck pain every day.
Food was edible but that's about it, my girlfriend got food poisoning from something. We suspect the ice cream or ice in the water (perhaps it was made with tap water?). The only good thing about the food was the beer, wine and rice. Seriously, the rice was awesome. Sadly, that's about it. Morning breakfast pancakes seemed to have been made days before and just reheated. One day, the tables were set up all nice with napkins etc, the other day not so much. We wouldn't even get a napkin. Very inconsistent service.
The restaurant has a what seems to be a cozy upstairs with a really spectacular view. I mean, seriously. But the chairs, sofa and everything there was stained and covered in the aforementioned various animal poop. Shame, really. The first day, I left there a glass and a bottle after I've finished my water, it seemed to be there 36h later when I went there again. I don't think the staff really bothers with it.
The pool isn't really a pool, it's a pond ( I don't think they advertise that they have a pool, but it is shown in pictures so just wanna give heads up). You could swim in it but I'd rather not.
The manager / owner did seem helpful and nice. The rest of the staff seemed like they just tried to keep up a positive atmosphere but they were giving this vibe of frustration. Perhaps because apart from us two there seemed to have been only 3 other people in the entire resort. At least I have not seen anyone else.
Internet is available only in the restaurant / common area and it's a dreadful 1mb speed shared amongst everyone. Don't expect 3g or LTE either. It's just Edge there. Which wouldn't really bother me if I didn't have to work. If you're looking for a place to be almost completely cut off the civilization, it'd be a good choice.
We asked about a trip to the waterfall. It costs $25, we were informed that that's the entire cost, so thinking that we'd be going to the waterfalls and back we didn't take any money or IDs or anything with us. Jungle. Waterfalls. Why take anything like that with you? When we arrived we had to pay for entry tickets etc. Awesome. Thankfully we were able to work out some deal and we go in. But a little heads up about this would've been nice.
Seriously, had that place been maintained properly, it'd have been one of the most fantastic resorts ever. We were supposed to stay there for 4 nights. We barely made it through 2 and decided to check out sooner. Just kind of ran away. On our way back to Luang Prabang we found a fantastic hotel for a fraction of the price. With the pool, proper food, and a room that's not being soiled on by wildlife.
I could go on and on but I think I made my points clear enough. I wish I could've written something more positive but the views are not enough to make up for all the faults.response / report this review -

This is the place to escape for a mid holiday break. Its far from any big city but that does not mean there is not things to do and places to explore. We found the most amazing waterfall, we enjoyed treks, and water boat touring. This is the view from the restaurant, I think the cat is the luckiest in all the world. They have a wonderfully cool eco-pool. And the accommodation is amazing. You will fell lost and wonderfully at home in nature at the Zen Namkhan

Very relaxed, beautifuly built resort away from the sometimes hectic city centre of Luang Prabang. Lovely staff, great host and an owner with an eco-friendly mindset.
The cottages are great and has everything you need. Some even have a view on the river, with a bit of luck (I did!) you might spot an elephant on the other side of the river.
