Major hunting and encroachment problems but as Lao protected areas go, protected areas across eastern Indochina in general, it has relatively good remaining forest and biodiversity. Management unit in charge does their very best in the face of huge challanges and are to thank for anything remaining at all. The good forest and wildlife is hidden deep inside a sea of maize and cattle and very difficult to access but the protected area management and partnering villages offer exceptional award winning conservation result-focused eco-tours, if you have the money. If you can not afford these there is a free hiking trail in the Hiam High School Forest but you will not have the opportunity to see any of the tropical forest or wildlife which remain deep in the recesses of this region.

One of the best managed protected areas in Laos! Since 2003 they have an active management program including activities as: ranger patrolling, community engagement, ecotourism, outreach, and monitoring of biodiversity, threats and forest cover!
The headquarters visitor center in Muang Hiam (also called Viengthong) is a great place to learn more about the protected area and their conservation work.
Worth the visit! Great example of community involvement in ecotourism and wildlife conservation in Laos!
So great!
