It's a field with big stones carved into jars. Scenic view. Very little to zero information about it. 15,000 kip entrance fee plus 5,000 kip for parking. Not very compelling, but I suppose it's still a must see in Xieng Khouang.
5 stars because of our fantastic guide - Mr Kong from Kong Keo Guesthouse.
This site is larger than site 2 and 3 and has bigger jars. It also has craters and lots of UXO markers left over from the war, as well as the partial cave with chimney where the jars were likely made. However the setting and ambiance was more interesting at 2 and 3. Depends what you're looking for. Be careful that all these sites can be muddy depending on weather.
Nice place to enjoy a quiet time. I found it terrible that the place is left as a garbage when it's a protected area with an entry fee.
Certainly a historic site that demonstrates something deemed very important by an ancient society Specifically what this was is not fully understood. The bombing of this area adds another facet to it's historical significance
The busiest and largest site. Although it's very good, making the effort to go to site 2 and 3 is worth it.
Interesting archological site. #1 is the largest but 2 and 3 are set in nice surrounding and are worth visiting
Very interesting place to visit. Lots of jars & some bomb craters. It's on a plateau. It was very windy the day I went there.
Better to before noon as the site is not selter, it's a great place to find more information of the unknown. It's has a garden of flowers at the entrances of the sites
Largest of the jar sites with a nice museum attached.
Must see if you are in luang prabang, 30mind lao skyway fly here instead of take the long bus. Mysterious stone jars.
Great mysterious place. Take a private tour to hear some great stories!
Plain of jars itself is an interesting sight but not really as impressive as expected and lacked information.
But Phonsavan itself is a rip off and quite expensive to get to and from. Accomdation is also very expensive for incredibly basic rooms.
The main attraction of Phonsavanh, and its surrounds, are the soon to world heritage listed Plain Of Jars sites. There are other attractions to visit, in the outlying areas of the province, but the jars are the main draw card. Site one, with roughly 300 jars, is the largest and, conveniently, the nearest at just ten kilometers from the township. Sites two and three are roughly between 25 – 30 kilometers from town and, although having fewer jars, are on more forested landscapes. There is less shade available at site one and, for this reason, it’s a better option to visit in the late afternoon when the heat has gone from the day. There’s also the added bonus of catching an outstanding sunset from the highest point of the site.
Very Disappointed!
It is less than I expected as according from websites information. The site only takes about less than 110 hours to finish. You can stay at there for as long as you can, but seriously not really that promising.
Really impressive. The jars are huge and quite mysterious. Also there are many craters from bombs that pocket the landscapeit's like an art museum/war memorial, very intense but beautiful.
A lot less spectacular than I expected.
Interesting to walk around, and there's a little visitor's centre with information on the site. Good for a couple of hours of something different to do, and the entrance ticket is very reasonable.
This is the biggest site in the area. If you are here this is likely why you came. Worth seeing.
