I felt bad writing this review. This place has a good mission and good cause. Therefore, I really didn’t want to write something bad, but felt obligated to add an honest review after our terrible experience today to warn other travelers. Our lunch was likely the worst meal we have had after 4 months in Southeast Asia, and probably the worst pizza we have ever eaten.
We were the only diners during the entire duration of our visit. We asked whether pizza was available on arrival, and the lady taking our order didn’t know but went and checked and confirmed that it was. We asked how big the pizza was, but she also did not know. We ordered a vegetarian pizza and a mango shake. While we waited, a small boy came to our table and sat down and started driving a toy car over our feet. This was ok because he was cute, but there was no one watching him or taking note of what was happening. Afterwards, a group of children playing football crowded onto the restaurant patio, and proceeded to kick the ball into and under our table before running into it. Again, no one was taking any note and the only adult nearby didn’t seem to care.
Around 20-30 minutes later, our mango shake finally arrived. Mangos are widely available in Southeast Asia and are always amazing. I don’t know where they got these mangos, but they were flavorless and terrible. There were chunks of ice which kept blocking the straw, and at 15,000 KIP, this was one of the most expensive ones we have found anywhere.
After over 30 minutes, we saw them light a fire, presumably on which to cook our pizza.
At 50 minutes of wait for our one pizza in a vacant restaurant, we oversaw the owner come out and argue with a man on the other side of the patio. She kept pointing at us, and the man yelled at her a couple of times and then stormed off. I’m not sure whether she was mad that we didn’t have our food or that they took so long to light the fire, but maybe they never should have told us the pizza was available. No one came over to our table to say anything to us despite being pointed at and our obvious displeasure with the wait time.
After around 1 hour and 20 minutes from arrival, our pizza finally shows up, no apologies for timing. The pizza looked awful. They either forgot to put on cheese, or decided to give us a vegan version of the vegetarian pizza. The vegetables, well This may have been another last minute cover up for an order they never should have accepted, but the pizza was totally covered with thick sliced white onion. Probably 80% of the vegetables were onion, the the other 20% was red pepper. The bottom was thin and so soggy that hung limp in your hand.
It was around 14:00 by the time we got our food, and we were starving. We started wolfing down our soggy onion cracker, only to find a huge long hair baked right into the bread. So long that it couldn’t be pulled out. By this point, we had enough. We left the remaining pizza, paid, and went and bought a second lunch at another restaurant. No one asked why we left the rest of our pizza behind. No one even acknowledged the absurd wait time.
What agitates me the most about this experience is that you really want to support this type of establishment. Unfortunately, extremely poor management isn’t making up for the lacks in food quality or service. A simple apology or request that we put in a different order would have helped. Notice that of the numerous very bad reviews, the manager has not responded to a single one. Not one apology or explanation for poor service or food.

Restaurant has a nice homely feel. Friendly staff. Great for children.
A bit hidden. It is easy to find when you see the big staircase with the two dragons from the main road. Walk up the first set of stairs and turn at the first left.response / report this review -

A vibrant, family feel restaraunt and guesthouse run alongside a shelter for hill based Hmong villagers and a dozen or so kids, VERY kid friendly. Run by Hmong for Hmong but launched by a lovely Dutch lady.
You can visit for lunch and dinner, stay as a guest or as a volunteer if you want to contribute in some way to the shelter. Worth investigating this very positive place if you are planning more than just a stop over in Huay Xai.response / report this review -

Nice place a little bit aside the main road. Many good feelings about helping other woman.
A very nice fish. More debatable pizza, which may be closer to a flammekuche !

Very nice bungalows with private bathroom for only 100K kips. Lovely restaurant serves delicious Mekong fish and wood oven pizza. Enjoy sitting around the fire with kind people from Hmong tribe and chill with tasty mojilao in your hand. All income goes back to hill tribe people so you have a great time and at the same time support good thing.

Good food (pizza after one month or Rice!!! Sooo goood ! And grilled fish absolutly delicious), nice people, nice bungalows, a place to share with travlers and Hmong people.
AND here you know that the monney you spend is USEFULL !
Local people's project, all monney goes to help community.

A hidden gem, well worth seeking out to sit by the fire and eat huge wood-smoked pizzas, fish and chicken with a nice cold beer.

Great value and delicious local cuisine (minced pork with sticky rice is a treat), served by friendly staff throughout the day and into the evening in a very relaxed lounge-style setting. They make a lovely mango smoothie.

Good food. Everything in this town is expensive. This place at least makes the cost feel more justified. The food does take a long time. In hindsight, we should have waited for the communal vegetarian dinner.

Best food in town by a long way. Great vibe sitting around the open fire in the terrace. In a town that doesn't have much to offer, this is a welcome oasis.
