From Vietnam to Laos. Vietnam side want 30000 VND for stamp, but refuse to pay and go to next windows. Then get exit stamp for free.
Laos side charge 16000 K for tourism promotion and 7000 K for Entry Tax with Receipt. Total 23000 K or USD 3 seems to be unavoidable. Exchange money possible, but bad rate. Got hitchhike on Big truck going to Lak sao easily from Hot spring with beautiful river.

I came from Lao and crossed into the Vietnam side. Took a sleeper midnight bus instead of pedaling across. Around midnight, the bus arrives and park with other busses + passengers and wait till 7am where the border office opens. In the morning the whole bus parking place will reek off piss due to everyone pees everywhere anywhere they can. On the Lao side there's not much immigration issue except that if you wanna change Kip to Dong, the exchange rate is horrible. i can deduced that the 200,000 kip i changed i lost about 100,000 dong from the official bank rates. The fun starts at the Vietnamese side where EVERYONE gets off their busses and herded into a 10 feet x 10 feet enclosure and there's no line no system everyone just pushes against each other to get to the front then once that's done you need to PAY the immigration officer to get your passport stamped. I didnt have to pay when i cycled from Bavet and years ago when i flew in. Once that done you will need to haul your luggage from the bus into an xray machine where the officer on duty was eating his noodles chatting away with his other buddies. Then wait for your bus then load everything back in and wait for an immigration dude to board the bus and Check your passport again. Whole thing took us 3 hours. Total BS.
