I spent 2 days/1 night @the camp. Program request: elephant bathing and trekking (no riding).
Nice and huge hotel with beautiful gardening area in the countryside @Nham Khan river bank. All Lao guide and hotel staff were very dedicated to comfort the visitor.
BUT the "ETHICAL TOURSIM" banner IS FAKE, because
    - Elephant riding is offered, trekking is not part of their regular schedule
    - Bullhooks and chains are USED although I was told in the booking office they dont prior to booking a tour (so they lied to me)
    - 1 elephant had a blind eye which was obviously infected (body fluid was running out of it) and this elephant still had to work!! When I asked about the medical treatment, it turned out that not enough care was provided and the management wasnt informed about the infected eye
    - 1 elephant had a big wound on her back and a hole-like wound on her righthand front leg which would need surgery
    - They claim in order to work @All Lao elephant camp "you have to love elephants" (poster, entrance area). This is FAKE. Mahouts change frequently in this camp, which is distorting for the elephant. Mahouts seem to do their job unemotionally. You will NOT get the feeling they love the elephants there as they come across very reserved and they dont care about your individual schedule as a visitor
    - There is no explicit rewarding of elephants except for the feeding. To me, the mahouts saw them as working tools only.
    - For bathing the visitor sits on the elephants neck and the mahout commands the elephant to give you showers by trampling on the elephant s back. There is no relaxing allowed for the elephant, you wont get to wash theminstead, it s pure work for the animal
    - Mis-management/ negletion of staff and work safety: When 1 staff had a motorbike accident on the way to work, there was no medical care provided at site (desinfection, wound care); mahouts have to stay in a shed-like rusty building; guides and mahouts were not provided with food or accomodation at site during their working hours (although the hotel had enough vacant rooms); All Lao tour guides even have to pay for their food at site if they have to stay there over night to accompany the visitor, not even a bed was provided for them (my guide slept outside on a bench!) --> All Lao staff is treated like a stray animal!!!
    - The management fails to take good care of his staff and fails to motivate and provide better opportunities for them, e.g. providing mahouts with English courses (so they could interact with the visitors); coaching mahouts in proper animal welfare (better worshipping of elephants)
Lot of room for improvement from the management site - this is not about animal conservation, this is a pure traditional business - far away from being ethical - for animals and staff!

The elephants live in a good environment and the guides take care about them. I haven't seen wounds at the elephants and nobody beat them.

It's a peaceful place with a nice hotel where you can play with elephants, take them for a walk and simply enjoy their presence. I surely recommend!
