I didn't stay there but I went to the bar. It's located on the last level and it's a great place to predrink and move on to the party after.
They have beer pong, loads of tables and seats. It gets pretty filled up and busy fast. Bar closes around 11pm. Everyone moves on to the clubs after.
The beds are very wide and comfortable! Very good social scene in the bar upstairs too! The coffee and food here is also okay, prices are average. The staff are friendly but I've definitely met friendlier staff at other hostels. Overall for the price you pay to stay here it's very good value for money. You can also have a good night's sleep if you're not into partying
Mad monkey was amazing, great atmosphere and great staff (S/O to Nicole and white buffalo (Hannah), give those girls a raise). The rooms were clean, the food in their restaurant was great and there were events every night so there's always something to do. I will definitely come back some day and will stay at Mad monkey hostels wherever I am if there's one available.
Cute hostel and worth the money.
Unfortunately, the bathroom had a strange smell and there have been cockroaches in our room, but it’s SE Asia, so excusable.
The rooftop bar is very good and the prices are cheap. The double rooms are generous and clean. The staff is very friendly and the food in the restaurant is also delicious.
The hostel lived up to its expectation of what I had read online. Loved the place. The dorms were maintained as well as in hotels. The ambience was way too good and they have party scene every night. The night I stayed they had a 20 litres fruit punch for free for all. The restaurant serves good food, I liked their chicken and mushroom pie a lot.
Would recommend this hostel for anyone going to Cambodia.
Location was very good, air conditioning and hot water was reliable and consistent. Staff were quite friendly and willing to help and understood good English. Would recommend staying here if traveling to Phnom Penh
We did all the Cambodian Mad Monkeys and the Phnom Penh staff made this our favourite. All of them made us laugh and have a good time but a special shout out to Nicole, Beck and Bree these girls took care of all the party people and made it a blast without any crazy incidents. We will miss you all
Fun.. Party crowd.. Great staff..
Only downside with this chain is understandably tough time controlling the bug situation with so look many travelers coming through from all corners of the globe (normally an automatic 0 stars, but I think they make an earnest effort and are honestly concerned with all guest's comfort and enjoyment!)
EDIT: This review used to be about the hostel's policy regarding local people. I thought Mad Monkey didn't want local people to sleep in the hostel, but I have since been contacted and they explained me everything! As per Cambodian law, they just need to sign a form (before 11pm).
So now I can wholeheartedly leave a 5-star review for the outstanding staff and atmosphere. Services are flawless. The staff is lovely, beyond helpful and very affectionate. It's the place to be if you want a stress-free stay and if you want to meet people.
I booked a private room for me and a friend. That friend happens to be male and Khmer. When we got back together to the hotel at 2am, the security told him (in Khmer) that he couldn't come inside because they didn't accept locals for the night. It took a bit of coaxing for my friend to translate what had been said, because he was obviously hurt and didn't want to show it. It was SO EMBARRASSING. I was so ashamed and MAD he dragged me back to his car and we ended up staying in another hostel.
I still don't know if they thought he was a money boy or if he was paying me for sex or something else, but under the funny Monkey messages about no wee wee in the swimming pool, you should consider adding "No local people". Of course that's a bit less funny than poop, but some people care about these details very much.

I put another star for the outstanding staff and atmosphere. Services are flawless. The staff is lovely, beyond helpful and very affectionate. I'd say I ADORED that place if it wasn't for that offending and confusing policy.
Mad monkey was awesome! The rooms were nice and air conditioning was great. The events held each day and night were always a bloody good time, especially with the customer service provided by Jordan. Mad monkey at Phnom Penh gets 5/5
The bar atmosphere was amazing and the bar staff + reception staff were also amazing. BUT if you want to sleep, then this is probably not the place (I booked a private double room). The sound insulation was pretty bad, and we could hear other people coming through the hallways late at night which kept us up, on top of being awake until 12am every night because of the bar being on the top floor of the whole building. The wifi didn't work in our building most of the time, and the menu was incredibly expensive for a hostel - so we never ate there. There were cheaper options nearby, such as Brown cafe, which had air conditioning, amazing food and even free water.
But I did return a 2nd time to this hostel despite not getting great sleep because it's located in one of the nicest (and probably safest) areas of Phnom Penh. It's not by the river where it's a bit seedy.
Really nice place. Beds are comfy and clean. Restaurant is good. It's a super party hostel so be prepared for late night screaming and beer pong yells extending into the morning.
Overall was great.
Except the part that I couldn’t get my deposit back during check out.
The security guard told me that I never paid any deposit during check in.
Yet during check the reception did ask for deposit and I paid.
Disappointed ending.
Cannot say enough good about this place. The dorms are exactly what you need, but it's the staff and facilities that make it one of ,if not the best hostel in Phnom penh. I've stayed 3 separate times and loved it more each time. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking to make friends and/or rest up. Something for everyone. *great in house restaurant as well
Great hostle!
Staff was amazing ecspecialy Beck!
Anytime we asked she had suggestions for the best place to go, best place to eat.
The walking tour was awesome hopefully it comes to fruition!
Beds were comfy and spacious dorms!
Jordan.
Thank you for your hospitality and amazing service. All staff members spoke a high level of English and were happy to assist/answer questions at all hours of the day. Special thank you to your wonderful bar staff Sam and Mono. Keep up the good work :)
Great place. Friendly helpful staff. Most speak excellent english. Good location. Cheap private a/c rooms available. I would highly recommend staying here..!! I will definitely stay there again.. hopefully one day soon.
Hey Mad Monkey> I'm kind of having a question; if I just pop up for drinks and meal without having to stay there,, does the hostel welcome me? Thank. Oh I rate five stars if you accept outisiders. LoL
This is a party hostel. Liked: friendly and helpful staff, decent food and coffee, cleanliness of rooms and bathrooms, foosball table, fun place to meet people. Didn't like: 4 flights of stairs to the room, the last of which is rather treacherous and passes through the bar, bar noise until midnight, secondhand smoke. Overall good place to stay if you're looking to party and meet people, or just don't mind drunken backpackers.
Good place with happening bar every night. Nice to meet people. Food at the restaurant downstairs was also good.
Good prices for beds, comfortable, not too crowded. Also great for general information for travelers about tours/local area. Be careful of the tuktuks outside for over charging, one tried to charge me 8 dollars for a journey I've taken multiple times before never for more than 4 dollars.
Good backpacker / party place / drinking games etc - the free punch is a nice touch and the drinks prices are fair.
Really uncomfortable beds. They look huge and lovely but they are nothing but springs. The bar is a great place to meet people. Location is good. Pretty expensive for what you get
Cool place. Good food, and cheap, fast Vietnamese visas. We didn't stay here, so I can't speak for the dorms.
Met really fun people, the bar on the roof is a good place to hang out. The beds are comfortable and all and there are limited bathrooms in the big dorms but its survivable. What I loved most was the murals on the walls, definitely some great art there. And the restaurant downstairs has good mac and cheese.
Very lively and active hostel. Party every night and lots of people hanging out in the bar, small pool and restaurant where you can get good food. The stuff at the reception are the nicest I've met with good advice and big smiles!
Only bad thing is the communal bathrooms are really not cleaned often enough (should be *at least* once a day!).
