Corrupt. Best to get a visa in advance for $30 otherwise you’re paying $35 for sure when the official price (seen at the actual embassy in Vientiane) is $30. Absolutely no signs here with prices.

1. Get Visa in advance for $30.
2. Pay $1 to exit Laos.
3. Enter building on left with “visa” sign. IGNORE all guys outside in small booth shouting about health check. This is a scam and is only required from Africa. Ignore uniformed officials who tell you “this is law of my country” and politely inform them it isn’t and you have checked this with embassy.
4. Walk into building down to end of hallway. Complete arrival card, get fingerprints taken (unavoidable) and photo taken.
5. When passport is returned you’ll be asked for $2 for a stamp (unless you just paid $35 for the Visa on arrival - corruption money already included). Note here that visas from embassy have $30 fee written on them. Visas from this checkpoint fee field is blank. Go figure.
6. Tell official you have no USD and smile. May ask to see bank card (??) but then just waves you on.
7. Congrats you made it and paid $0 in corruption money.

Paid the 40 USD to the bus company representative, which fixed the visa for Cambodia and exit stamp for Laos. No carrying my big backpack, with exception of some waiting, no hassle.

Notify your embassy about your experience.

This place is a well thought-out scam.
You can pay 40 dollar and get through worry-free ('heck, it's just a few dollars, right?'). You will still have to wait for the people who resist the corruption. But you can wait at the restaurant. (the busdrives won't leave because they WANT you to wait here. They have time and you have money).

From Laos to Cambodja
Stamp; Can get it for free, be last in line for better chance. Or pay 1USD max!
Health check; If you have a vaccination book, you will get through easily.
Visa; They will ask 35USD for a 30USD visa. Try to haggle for lower price (you will NOT pay 30USD).

You have little to no power and you will have to fight hard to save a few dollars. Consider an E-visa.
Contact your embassy and notify them, leave reviews on google and tripadvisor. Try to say 'no' to corruption in some way.

P.S. Load up on snacks before boarding the bus.

SOMEONE NEEDS TO CORRECT THESE POLICE! Here the police is corrupted, so bad they always are looking for cheating you, money money money, also the person who supposedly check your health, no friendly people and they disrespect you, appart of not speaking English, they retain you of anything, they were not able to know where is my country, then asking for nonsense questions and even asking you for new dollar bill, to some other people they request 35 dollars for the visa of the baby children.

Welcome to CORRUPTION PARADISE!
Enjoy the beauty of scams while interacting with the wonderful officers that work hard to make sure every visitor of their country gets to leave or enter it at a fair price. Don't get scared when the officer starts screaming, this is his natural behaviour.

2 dollar stamping fee is all they want. You don't have to pay this, why should you? To get a visa you pay, to get the stamp you don't pay. It is part of the package. But for the corrupt officers it is a way to be able to buy some extra beers that evening.

How to not pay the stamping fee (it is tough, but in the end it will work):
Be clear from the beginning, you won't pay. Tell him you have been through this many times. Tell him you have the time to wait. Get angry. In the end: he/she knows that it is a scam, so they cannot call the police. They will just ignore you or scream at you. Believe me, They cry at night.

What doesn't (really) work:
- threaten to call your embassy; They will say "go ahead"
- go in discussion (They get it every day, They are experienced)

They try to cheat wherever they can. At least most of the custom staff was friendly. But if you come with a car or bike and have to meet the custom officer never met such an unfriendly and unhelpful person at any other border. They should dismiss this man. His behaviour leaves a bad taste on cambodian hospitality.

Probably the most corrupt border crossing in SE Asia , both sides are in competition to see who can get more of your dollars and cheat you at the same time. Left a very sour taste in my mouth.

A couple of tips:

- If you're coming with a tour agency, they will probably explain you that you can give your passports to them for them to arrange Laos visa for you. You can totally do this yourself too and save $4-$9. But that means carrying your backpack across the border yourself and dealing with officials yourself. Also the tour guy might try to scare you by saying "oh, if you do yourself and can't finish in 30min then we don't wait for you, we'll leave". If you're more than a few people, he won't be able to do that (still, don't try to condescend or mock the guy, just act nice, polite but firm)

- When Cambodian border police asks you $2 for stamp, just look like you're confused (but NOT in an angry or condescending way). Look miserable and say you don't understand why. They'll just stamp and let you go

- Escaping bribe won't be possible on the Laotian border. They'll also ask $2 for stamp (other than visa fee and $1 visa service fee). No matter how much you try to look confused, they'll just say "ok, go and wait if you don't have money" until you don't have time to wait anymore.

It is easy to pass drive the car across the border of Cambodia and Laos. Just prepared some document and pay some small tip, should be less than 20$ for both side.
