One of the higher Temples in thé area and guarantee for a nice view around and watch the sunset. Rather calm as not so known and not so big. Watch thé lion sculptures.

The East Mebon is a mountain temple symbol dedicated to Shiva build by King Rajendravarman II halfway the 10th century. It was constructed on a man made 120 meters wide island in the East Baray, a huge water reservoir measuring 2 by 7 kilometers, and was only reachable by boat.

One of the more interesting temples that you can go to on your temple visits in Siem Reap. It's part of the big circuit which clumps the nearby temples together. Note that there is little shade on this site so bring a hat!

East Mebon is a large temple-mountain-like ruin, rising three levels and crowned by five towers. Jayavarman IV, a usurper, moved the capital from Angkor to Koh Ker in 928AD. Sixteen years later Rajendravarman II returned the capital to Angkor and shortly thereafter constructed East Mebon on an island in the middle of the now dry Eastern Baray. The temple is dedicated to Shiva in honor of the king’s parents. Inscriptions indicate that it was also built to help reestablish the continuity of kingship at Angkor in light of the interruption that occurred when the seat of power had been moved to Koh Ker. There is some scholarly debate as to whether East Mebon should be categorized as a temple-mountain. Inscriptions record activity as early as 947AD, but the temple was not consecrated until 952AD.

East Mebon may not be as grand as Bayon or Angkor Wat but it is none the less a great temple to visit in Angkor. It is a partially restored temple mountain, you can climb to the top tier and enjoy the view and contemplate. It is very peaceful as there is little crowd. Look out for the elephant sculptures at the four corners of the lower two tiers. Definitely worth visiting if you have the time.

Beautiful temple, but not much to see there. Less crowded so can spend sometime pondering if you like that. Not a temple to go for if you want to have less time on your trip, but go there if you have time and want some peaceful less crowded place. Late afternoon/evening recommended when the sun is in the West and coats the temple golden.
