The Arrogant Manager Manager of Vision Gate Kitale
    Wednesday 14, June 2017..8am-9am

Mr. Manager, If you do not like someone sitting at the ground floor restaurant, or working on a laptop, what is so difficult in asking him slowly without creating drama to leave? You don’t have to shout and show arrogance - some of us do not know the rules of your hotel.

You see, I travel most times, and I carry my work with me on the laptop. Mostly, I like to work in hotels; reply/write emails in the morning.

On this fateful morning of 14th June 2017, I just had breakfast at the restaurant on the first floor of the Vision Gate. I had spent the night in room 317, and after breakfast, my client called me, asked me to be ready as he was to pick me anytime from the hotel. I had to hurriedly finish breakfast and take my luggage with me to the ground floor (where there is another restaurant). I chose to sit the outside part of the restaurant, little did I know this is a no-go zone for people who spend the night in the same hotel. A waiter would then come to ask whether I needed anything. I explained to him I had spent the night there, and I would wait for my client to pick me anytime. The waiters and the hotel receptionist were fantastic people; spoke well and portrayed professionalism.

When client took long (about 10 minutes) to arrive, I decided to open my laptop and finish replying to some emails. After about 10 minutes my client called, and was asking where I was. Then a man came, breathing fire, throwing insults at me. “ Why are you seated here? Don’t you see you are blocking serious customers…”. At first, I thought it was a mad man, and I could not comprehend most of what he was saying with his broken English tagged in Luhya language.

Then he said..”I am the manager! You are not cautious because….customers….all over the world.” I could not get all the words since I was on earpiece taking the call from my client. Even though I replied, I am not sure what I did wrong. I can only guess that I was sitting on a seat meant to be occupied by someone else.

“OK, I am leaving!”, I told him. “You don’t just leave, first apologize!” said the arrogant manager. Then he went and kick-started a motorbike, packed at restaurant entrance, only to move it a few meters and stop. He seemed restless because of the lecture he had given me - appearing to be in a hurry but going nowhere. Well, I apologized, for what I am not aware of, and left the hotel, in a hurry. Who would want to have their mood destroyed with the wrath of the Arrogant Manager? I am Lucky, my client was so jovial all day; he revived my mood, and made the rest of the day more than interesting.
