Nice island. Private lodges are nice. Get East Africa discount. Food OK. Note. Power in rooms is turned off from 10:00am till 5:00pm every day. Nice international crowd from all over the world. Great wifi everywhere. The place very clean and friendly. Bring your own water to the three pools from your room. Scuba, kayak, sailing, gym, spa, deep sea fishing, beautiful private forest. Very private and relaxing Long drive from airport.

Chale Island is gorgeous!! My favorite place I have visited. The food is buffet and they have specials they cook like pasta and omelettes. Lots of fresh fruit. Good deserts. Afternoon tea is fun. Three beautiful pools. Private beach. The cottages are the place to rent. Lots of privacy. I will always go back to Chale Island when I visit Kenya.

    What paradise must be like.
An exquisite island, accessed by a tractor or boat (at high tide). It it's beautifully run with cottages scattered around the edge to give you a sea view, amazing dining facilities, pools, and very efficient staff that do a discrete job to make every guest feel special.

Called to arrange for dinner this morning, hiked 15km along the beach only to arrive and be told to turn back. Very disrespectful guards at the dock. If the island is private past 6 then tell people that when they call and don't tell them to come for dinner!

We arrived full of optimism for a luxury, romantic getaway. Unfortunately, we took away a little more than we bargained for.
Undoubtedly, this is a unique location. I hesitate to say beautiful because when one is on the island, one cannot truly appreciate it. Having started our holiday with an unscheduled stop at Mombasa Hospital, we decided on arrival to upgrade our room to a banda at a considerable, but we hoped worthwhile, extra cost.
The size of the banda was good, with pleasant views towards the mainland but the interior felt dark and dingy. Unfortunately, a consequence of the traditional, thatched roof is that geekos tend to poop everywhere, including over your stuff.
The policy of turning the electricity off during the day, approximately 10am-5pm, means that your banda is too uncomfortably hot to spend any amount of time in, and when the electricity does come back on, the AC struggles to make an impact in such a huge space.
Drinks in the bar were good and reasonably priced. The food in the restaurant was also good, but it wasn`t especially exciting. Service was generally friendly and efficient. There was entertainment on our first night, which was fun.
Disappointingly though, sleep was not something I had much of during our stay. During the first night I was woken at 1.15am by angry, raised voices which, after a call to reception, turned out to be noisy guests who had just checked in to the banda next to us.
Things took a turn for the worse though on our second night, when upon returning from dinner, we walked into the room to see a large, black rat on the dressing table. It soon scarpered but not before it had tucked in to some unopened chocolate I had in my suitcase. We called reception and 2 staff appeared with an insecticide spray - a novel approach! Needless to say, later on in the night the rat made a reappearance, this time on the bedside table. Two phone calls to reception later, no one appeared and nothing was done. Eventually, we slept.
Now in the morning, we eagerly packed our bags to leave and found that Mr Rat had also done his business in the suitcase - gross. We checked out but reception were ambivalent about our story, which was a disappointing response.
When we returned to the family home in Mombasa, I discovered on unpacking the suitcase, the damn rat had also munched on several items of our clothing to the extent we had to throw them away.
Now even that was not the end of the saga. We went out for dinner that night only to receive a panicked phone call to say that the rat had not only ruined our things but had indeed travelled, in our suitcase, back to Mombasa and was now in our bedroom! This left us needing to organise for the rat to be dispatched and disposed of.
Amusingly, the hotel called us afterwards, asking us to pay an extra 1000 shillings which they had missed off the bill. Let`s say our response was short and simple.
Needless to say, after this experience, we will not be going back. If you don`t mind being ever so close to nature and rather hot and sweaty, then by all means give this place a go. Just be sure to check your suitcase before you leave!
